Five democratic state lawmakers have defected to the Republican Party so far in 2023, part of a growing trend experts say is caused by red states becoming redder and blue states becoming bluer.

Ten state lawmakers switched parties in 2023, and six of them switched between major parties, Politico reported. Out of those six defectors from major parties, five switched from Democrat to Republican.

Defected? Or they were always Republican and ran Democrat to get elected. That's exactly what they've been doing lately.

Carroll Quigley, Bill Clinton’s mentor, saw it all as a uni-party anyway.

The problem with one party states (as NM is becoming) is that there's no escape from the Party apparatus. If you want to get elected as District Attorney in my county you must be a Democrat. It's not that you couldn't run as a Republican. The local GOP would be thrilled to have a qualified candidate. Any qualified candidate. But it's a political suicide mission.

As recently as the early 2000s a Republican could get elected around here but not anymore.

In my ruby red county, we had a capable County Supervisor serve for 12 years, getting elected with 70%+ of the vote. In 2016, he changed his registration to independent. Despite running against a Democrat with no other competition, his share of the vote dropped 20% and he barely squeaked by.

In 2020, the same supervisor who served for 16 years changed his registration to Democrat and lost 80/20 to a guy who never even campaigned.

I ordered the voter registration data and did the research for Statehouse.

If I activated every Democratic and independent voter in my district, somehow got 20% of the reliable Republicans to stay home, I'd still lose.

For most people, politics isn't about principles or even about policies, it's about cheering for your team and booing the other team.

The press reports it that way (I mean real, "mainstream" "left-leaning" press - I don't expect anything from Bulls### Mountain and the likes). How many articles talk about "voters don't trust Biden on economy"? How many discuss Biden's actual, you know, record on economy, in an objective way? It's to the point of being like 2016, when coverage ratio of "Hillary's emails" vs. her policies and qualifications was like 40:1 (if not 100:1).

    Biden/Harris 2024.

I don't disagree, but it begets the question whether most people actually want real journalism.

I have a feeling that what we see is what's cheaper to produce, not necessarily "what people want". Funny how they call oligopolic corporate media "left wing".
