I don't post much here, but I read the board religiously and I wanted to thank everyone here with a special thanks to Lawrie Miller for all of his hard work on his "BA in Four Weeks" site.

I've always been down on myself because I didn't finish college as a kid, but never found the discipline as an adult to go back to school. In the fall of 2002 I finally enrolled at the local community college intending to spend whatever time it would take to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. I figured it would take years to fit it in, taking classes at night after work.

I finished the fall semester but was discouraged when I found out how many basic level classes I was going to have to sit through. I resented the waste of time they represented. I remembered hearing about the CLEP exams, and I went to the school's testing center to see if I could at least test out of English 101. To my delight, the test (Analyzing and Interpreting Literature) was computerized. I was able to take it right away and see my score instantly. I scored 74 and they told me I would be able to skip English 101!

This just got me started thinking about how I might be able to skip other classes where I felt I already had knowledge of the course material. English 102 was next (CLEP American Literature). I started searching on the internet for more information about the CLEP program, and I found the newsgroup alt.education.distance, this forum and Mr. Miller's site. I decided I would keep taking CLEPs (with no prior preparation) until I failed one. I took and passed 14 exams until I finally met my match (Chemistry).

Then I started on the DANTES exams. I had the school's testing center order 10 exams. I took them over a two week period after they arrived and waited for the results. I passed all 10 -- all but one with a high enough score to rate an "A" on Excelsior's scale. It was time to get evaluations from Charter Oak and Excelsior (TESC just seemed too expensive).

Charter Oak was willing to give me the most credit for what I had already completed, so I enrolled in August. My advisor suggested a concentration and told me I would need 9 more upper division units. She suggested three Excelsior College exams. I passed them and am now simply waiting for approval of my concentration proposal.

In total, I took 30 exams, passed 29 and failed 1. I also took 12 classes at the local community college (some in person and some via WebCT). My concentration at COSC will be "Business and Human Behavior". Here's the list:

    AP Exams
AP US History (from high school in 1984): 4
    AP English Literature/Composition (from 1985): 5

    CLEP Exams

    DANTES Exams
    Drug & Alcohol Abuse: A (56)
    Principles of Supervision: A (64)
    Introduction to Business: A (71)
    Criminal Justice: A (60)
    Here's to Your Health: A (66)

    ECE Exams
Psychology of Adulthood & Aging: B

    Labor Relations: A

I also took the following classes at the community college:

ANTH 101: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (A)
CIT 101: Intro to Management Information Systems (A)
    ENG107: Technical Communications (A)
ENG 252: Introduction to Drama (A)
ENV 101: Introduction to Environmental Science (A)
    HIST 217: Nevada History (A)
LT 201: Research on the Internet (A)
    Math 126: Precalculus (A)
    MUS 121: Music Appreciation (A)
SOC 101: Principles of Sociology (A)
SOC 205: Ethnic Groups in Contemporary Society (A)
    SPH 101: Oral Communication (A)

I plan on taking a few more ECE exams and the psychology GRE (actually the sitting this Saturday) to obtain a second undergraduate degree from Excelsior College, finding a masters program (maybe CSUDH) or exploring law school. All of you here were a major part of my success and motivation and I thank you. It didn't take four weeks, but it did take a substantially shorter time than I could have ever imagined.

Does COSC offers BS degree in Business Administration or Computer Information Systems or just BS in General Studies (I am looking for major in CIS not concentration ) ? Does COSC degree will say BS in CIS or Business Administration ?

Also how much did it cost you at COSC ? what is their fees ? I sent an email to COSC two weeks back with a bunch of questions, did not hear from them yet ?

    Thanks.

    Congratulations Dave!

I am also taking the GRE Psych test this Saturday. I have used the Cracking the GRE-Psych (princeton review), read a couple of introductory psych texts, and am using two free sites for Developmental Psych and Social Psych . Maybe these two sites will be usefull to you or another reader.

    Good luck on Sat!
