Financial Aid for a prisoner

I have a relative who is a full time resident at a prison facility in Texas. He has up to 5 more years to go (there is a possibility of parole before then, but we aren't counting on it).

He has a BS and is interested in taking courses while still incarcerated, working on a Masters. I do think he is interested in theological studies, but I am not totally sure about that. His undergrad is in science of some sort.

Anyway, he had a fellow prisoner (since paroled) who completed a graduate degree in theology at no cost. My relative doesn't know which school or what sort of financial aid was available, but is interested in doing something similar. He and his wife are not financially capable of putting up much money (since he obviously isn't bringing much in by way of income).

I am not aware of schools that provide prisoners with free tuition, or some other form of financial aid, but I thought some of you might. Does anyone know of a program that would allow my relative to pursue his studies from prison at little or no cost? I should point out that online courses are out of the question. It would have to be old school correspondence or some other method of instruction that he could do via snail mail.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Many inmates have found the "Advice for people in prison" chapter of my book helpful. That chapter was written by Douglas Dean, who earned his BA, MA and PhD from major universities while serving life without parole in a maximum security prison. That chapter is free on line here: Bears' guide to earning degrees by ... - Google Books

Thank for the recommendations. As stated, he is a relative, but I haven't personally spoken to him since he began his little venture in the penal system. But his wife knew I was involved in DL and thought I might have such answers. Of course, I didn't, but I knew someone here would.

I will pass the information along. Again, I appreciate it.
