Here's a fascinating Email being received by non-.edu schools. I hope that Educause, who regulate the .edu name, will find it of interest as well. (Yes, I sent them a copy.)

    .EDU Address for Sale

You likely know how difficult it is to obtain a prestigious .EDU address. New schools must have accreditation recognized by the United States Department of Education.

The address for sale was established years ago and is exempt from the new rules requiring accreditation.

EDU addresses are normally nontransferable, but we can not only insure it is transferred but we will also change the name to any name you choose. (i.e. For example, we can change the name from the existing ABC.edu to your XWZ.edu - assuming the XYZ.edu has not been taken by another institution.)

The minimum bid, including the costs of transfer and renaming, is $25,000.00. Bids will close on June 30, 2003 and is subject to prior sale. (All monies will be kept in escrow or attorney trust accounts until the transfer is complete and the domain is available for your use.) We have no objection to working with your attorney to ensure your funds are protected until the
    process is complete.

    stregis.edu - I can see it now.

Wouldn't the new owner need a US address?

An inquiry made to the seller's agent produced the response that a sale has already been concluded at $42,500, but back-up offers are being entertained.

Educause seemed appropriately concerned when I reported this. So I put in the additional concern, surely not a surprise to them, about the distressing number of terrible schools that were grandfathered in with their .edu.

Then how did Novus University just get one?

http://www.novus.edu must be very recent; the content still says (under "General Info"): "our address is www.NovusU.org, and www.NovusU.com and www.NovusU.net".

..........decisions, decisions.........does one get an .edu domaine and pay $25,000 or should one pay $50,000 for Liberian accreditation and keep the .org domain? Should I ask my investment broker?

Or do you get an .edulr domain like St Regis(and maybe from St. Regis). Mind you many of the Liberia group have .ac (Ascension Island)

The degree mill business just gets harder and harder.
