I took the DSST Technical Writing yesterday and found it rather easy. However, I found out when I got to the test center that there was an essay requirement. It says that it won't be graded with the scantron test. My proctor told me that not every school requires the essay but I figured I'd do it to be on the safe side. I didn't have a chance to call Thomas Edison to see if they require it.

By the time I finished the essay and ran out of stuff to put in it I think it seemed short of 300 words but didn't have another sheet to start over. I didn't want it to make it too wordt since this was technical writing.

I'm wondering how the grade will be affected if at all by the essay.

I found nothing in the TESC catalog about it except that they accept the test but give no further detail. Does anyone know if TESC requires an essay for this exam?

Well my advisor at TESC said they don't even read the essays there. But anyway the essay was something like a few hundred words giving instructions on how to perform a procedural task. (Like writing an instruction manual) It's nothing hard, just a pain in the neck. (e.g. operating an electric percolator, putting something together....opeating a new computer program.....) they give examples and you get to choose.

In a real life instruction manual you'd have to write it in English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese...:D Here you only have to write it in English;) .

I really can't think of too many ways to "prepare".

Thank you soooooooo much for the info, I will just try to focus on what you said and hopefully it all goes smoothly;)

Unfortunately I "need" to write the essay:( other wise I would have just ignored it.

    Thanks again
