Any of you in doctoral programs have any success with grants, scholarships or funding other than loans? I am beginning a doctoral program in the fall, but there are limited scholarships and virtually no assistantships for part time evening and/or weekends. As it looks now, I will be paying out of pocket, but have over a 3.5 graduate gpa in two previous Masters progams. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I am using some of the money I make from teaching online to pay for my doctorate. I do not plan on using student loans, scholarships, or grants. Since you have a master’s degree, you could look for a part-time teaching job.

Notice, I said I am using some of the money I make from teaching. I only teach one class and I make enough to more than pay for my studies at DSU. For me, DSU is very affordable. I just wish other schools offering DL programs would stop being so greedy and set their DL rates to something more reasonable. It really pisses me off when I see schools like Nova, Walden, Capella, UoP, and so on charging ridiculous rates for their doctoral programs. It's not as if their names are anything to brag about.

    Okay...I'm off of my soapbox.

Have you checked with your school? My school helped with the process of financial aid. I didn't need it, so not entirely sure how it all worked, but know I saw information from the school to help.

Did you check with your employer? My employer is picking up the tuition tab for my doctoral study.

My employer is a university, and even they won't do that! I get free tuition here at Marymount, but only here. Alas, no doctoral programs.

I teach at a tribal community college. While the pay is low, we have a good deal of money available for grants. My doctoral tuition is being paid for through a faculty development grant.

I'm a bit under the gun because the grant expires in June 2008. I hope to be done by then, but if not, after 16 quarters at Capella, the tuition drops dramatically. I'm starting quarter 14 right now...
