Re: University of New Mexico doctor hat.

YUCK ! What type of "weed" was the faculty committee smoking when they came up with that design ? I'd just wear a mortarboard or a doctoral tam. That design is hideous !

Actually you can order a beefeater hat, soft 4-sided, 6-sided or 8-sided or mortar board hat from any of the regalia outfits. They run between $60 and $100 depending on what you want. You can also order them in degree color (e.g. navy for Ph.D. or light blue for Ed.D.) or balck velvet and two different kinds of gold tassels. A number of places now sell the entire outfit for under $300. However to get better regalia that will last, you may want to spend a little more. I teach at more than one school and actually use my regalia 4-5 times a year. When I ordered mine I was able to get exactly what I wanted ad still stay within the American rules. I actually look forward to convocation each time to see my students graduate.

Can you do that? I thought that the SCHOOL, not the DEGREE HOLDER, prescribes the regalia?

Sorry Nosborne, them hats is weird. Very '60s.

This thread is cool. I looked in the regalia company website (vide supra) and was stupidly gratified to see that the doc robes for Brown University are--brown!

Actually, the best headgear is the squatty black turban worn by Syrian Orthodox and Coptic clergy. Less cliched than the mortarboard and a damn sight more dignified than these mutant beefeater things and bloated tams. If I can find a pix I'll link it.

I would think the regalia only matters at the timeof the ceremony, after that, what does it matter? Eventually regalia wears out (My Masters gown was starting to shred, and the hood was never very impressive). I did notice one of the guys in the last Argosy ceremony had gold piping around the sargeant stripes, and he wore a tam with gold piping rather than the same garb as the rest of us.

I understand that the University of London has its own special regalia...maybe someday I'll find out for myself...

The school prescribes the hood. For example some schools (like Oklahoma State) prescribe that the hood velvet will be navy blue for all Ph.D.'s no matter what the field and light blue for all Ed.D. and they prescribe green for the the D.O.. Other schools allow for degree color to be used on the hood, for example a Ph.D. in chemestry could choose yellow gold for the velvet on the hood at some schools, whereas at other schools only a Sc.D. would have that color. Certain schools prescribe specific robes and hoods such as Harvard and most Ivy leagues schools. The University of Washington has a very interesting purple robe, purple velvet, purple hood with gold and purple satin and purple tam. However, a student, graduating from a school who does not prescribe the specific robe, will have a black robe and can choose degree color such as navy or light blue for the velvet on the robe, and can choose a tam that is black or degree color. When I graduated at OSU, some used rented robes with black velvet and mortor board tams. However those of us who baught our regalia were able to make choices about our regalia and we also received a much better quality hood.

    Regalia

Nos, here is the link for University of London regalia or as they call it, academic dress.

The sleeves on their master's gown ends at the elbow and the gown is worn open, so it's good to wear a dark suit. The hood fits under your tie in the front. Some photos from another university SHU

Thanks! That's some inducement to study, anyway!

Say, since I've decided to take online tuition from Law Tutors Online (highly recommended on this forum) is LOT acting as my college?

Do they have their own regalia ? Sounds like a topic for your master's dissertation. :D

    Funny Hats

Unc, I've seen the Coptic one - very rounded, here is a link to a Coptic church in So Cal with pictures.

The Greek Orthodox have the KAMELAVKION - "a cylindrical hat [or chimney-pot hat], usually with a small brim on top, worn by the three orders of priesthood. Monks, bishops (since they were monks) and certain dignitaries usually cover this hat with the Epano-kamelavkion, the black monastic veil. " Only the celibate clergy use the black monastic veil. Not celibate, no veil. :D
