    Dear Mark,

    Thank you for your response.

I have one question regarding UNISA. I read your postings about the testing centers in the United States, but what about if a student lives in a country that doesn't have any UNISA centers? Is it possible to arrange having a proctor at a recognize local university? Do you know how UNISA approaches this?

Thank you for all your help.

    Sincerely yours,

    Karlos,

It is possible for some people that a site in a nearby country may be closer than the sites in one's own country. A list of the approved exam centers may be found at
    http://www.unisa.ac.za/study/exams/excentres.html

Last week I had e-mailed Unisa with an inquiry about alternate exam centers, and I received a reply today. They stated that, if a student is "living very far from the nearest exam centre, involving flights, hotel costs etc.", it may be possible to arrange for an exam under the supervision of a local university or college. The student would then be expected to pay for any proctor and room use fees, as well as for courier fees to return the completed exams to Unisa. I would expect that in most cases these costs would be far less than the cost of airfare, hotel, and lost wages. Arrangements must be made well in advance of the exam date- not later than 23 March for the May/June exams, for instance.

This is very encouraging news for those of us living hundreds of miles from the nearest approved exam center.

    Best wishes,

    Alex

    Dear Alex,

Thank you very much for your advice.

Although I am living right now in Kendall, Florida, I am planning to move this year to Costa Rica, Central America. The nearest center from Costa Rica is Mexico which is thousands of miles away. So, I most certainly agree with you: your E-mail from UNISA is really encouraging.

    All the best,

    Alex,

That's good information! May I quote you on that on my Unisa page?

    Mark,

Sure, you can mention this possibility. Just remember that it is up to Unisa to decide how far away is "very far" from an exam center. The University general regulations (A22) state that "The University reserves the right to approve or refuse any application for a special examination centre at any place." So each prospective students will have to check it out for his or her particular situation.

Nonetheless, I do find it very encouraging, and it will allow me to keep Unisa under consideration.

If you want to pursue an EE related degree you may want to check out the Excelsior College Electrical Engineering Technology degree programs. These can help you combine EE corusework and exams into a degree program. The degree is non-resident and is ABET accredited. http://www.excelsior.edu

This statement here tells me that you are not a good candidate for distance learning at all.
