I was watching lectures by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine and was impressed by the objectivity. She's Jewish, so that's probably why her content is more academic than indoctrination, but she also taught at Vanderbilt, which is no longer affiliated with the Methodists. That got me to thinking that one may not have to attend a secular religious studies program to get a good education. One might find it in an MDiv or theology program at a Divinity School, which tends to be more academic than seminaries, but not always.

If anyone knows of online programs at Divinity Schools or seminaries at secular colleges and universities, please link to them here.

Sort of related, Liberty University recently announced that their John W. Rawlings School of Divinity is launching the Liberty Theological Seminary. Generally, seminaries are focused on practical training for ministry whereas Divinity Schools are focused on academic training. It sounds like Liberty University is doubling down on proselytism instead of focusing on the academic study of the Bible, its origins, and the formation of the Christian religion.

“With the launch of the Liberty Theological Seminary under the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity, we will double down on biblical and theological training that understands the context of a complex culture and how God’s people carry out the Great Commission to see untold millions come to the saving knowledge of Jesus and be discipled to follow Him,” said Dean Troy Temple. “This is a great door of opportunity.”

He said the seminary plans to reenvision its Master of Divinity and doctoral programs in the future.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the hope is to achieve higher ranks and clickthroughs for search terms like "online seminary."

Well, they need to do something to counteract the corrosive effects of White Nationalism masquerading as orthodox Christianity.

This is not a hopeless task. It's where the Jesuits came from (although I don't think even the Vatican claims that Protestants are not Christians.)

    I wish them every success.
