Not sure if this has previously been posted. Came across this and wanted to share. What is new [to me, at least], is that rather than yearly face-to-face meetings with your doctoral supervisor, meetings are now done via Skype. PhD via distance learning | The School of Divinity, History and Philosophy | The University of Aberdeen "PhD via distance learning You can now apply for full-time or part-time PhD studies via distance learning in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy. Distance learning programmes on offer include: PhD Divinity, PhD in Religious Studies, PhD in History, PhD in History of Art and PhD in Philosophy. Before you make an application for the PhD via distance learning, you should contact a potential supervisor to discuss the feasibility of conducting your research at a distance. Additionally, you and your potential supervisor should discuss whether your research can be undertaken completely at a distance or whether some campus trips will be necessary, especially with regards to acquiring necessary research skills."
