I currently have a BS in Criminal Justice from Southwest University (DETC). I am know interested in obtaining some basic business knowledge and wan't to earn a second BS in Business, Accounting or Finance. Does anyone know of a low cost RA school where they would consider most of my previous credits in order to obtain this sought after degree without having to take the usual resident requirement of 30 credits. Thanks
I could be wrong but I believe only the big three (and perhaps WGU). do not require 30 units in residence
Get an MBA! You're going to have to take at least 30 semester hours for a second bachelors, even at the Big 3, which is about what you'd spend to get an MBA. I can't think of any scenario where it would be better to get a second BS in business instead of an MBA. There are so many MBA programs, including RA, that you will find one to admit you with your non-business, NA degree.
By spend, do you mean time? Not even a DETC MBA is that inexpensive. Scenario: A person who is not entering the buisness or management world feels it important to obtain a basic understanding of how business works. He wants a degree as a means to ensure the quality of his learning, as a reward for his effort and to show the world (including employers and clients) that he is no business dunce. BTW: this scenario fits mine, which is why I'm considering a Business BS after my Liberal Arts double major BA. Since most MBA programs require at least a few prerequisite courses anyway, the expense time and moneywise wouldn't be so much greater to complete a second BS with Excelsior. However, even the least expensive MBA out there is sure to set you back quite a few thousand. A business degree from the Big Three would be a beneficial temporary star on one's resume, even if one wishes to complete an MBA in the future. Then again, maybe one isn't sure if he could complete an MBA due to a potential lack of interest in the subject matter. Trying a BS could weed out one's preference for this path.
Most, but not all, MBAs have prerequisites, and there are many inexpensive ones. The 30 hours you will spend in time and money on a 2nd BS degree will be at the upper undergraduate level and not that much cheaper or easier than graduate credits. The only big difference would be if you planned on testing for your undergraduate credits. Otherwise, in the end you would finish with another BS for just a little less time and cost than an MBA...one is a move up and the other a move over.
Yes, I was thinking about testing for much of it. Otherwise, I agree, the ROI makes a ton more sense for an MBA. Of course, an MBA is myriad lightyears ahead of a BS in terms of value. OK, enough with the thread hijacking and back to the topic at hand: of all the many business programs, which ones would accept a DETC undergraduate degree?
If you are just looking for basic business knowledge, perhaps a certificate course would be a better alternative, since already have a bachelor degree.
