Degree Verification

  1. What's the best way to verify that someone has obtained a degree from an institution? I have a coworker that states he has two Ph.D's (Business and Theology) but I can't seem to track that down. When Googled the only thing I see is a "Stanford Who's Who" (Not to be confused with Stanford University) article that states..."He obtained a Masters and Ph.D from Touro University". It's not to big of a deal with me but he has rubbed a few of the bosses the wrong way so they are starting to wonder. :headache: Any suggestions?

You can try calling the school. Under FERPA, a person's degrees are considered "directory information" and can be disclosed unless a person has explicitly requested that they not be disclosed.

You can use National Student Clearinghouse. I think most of employers and Government use this service to verify others' educational credentials.

I was just posting the same thing -- you could try the online DegreeVerify service at the National Student Clearinghouse. However, this will cost $9.95 per request. If you work for a large organization, they might have an account.

Since the concern involves the PhD degree, yet another approach might be to check the ProQuest database of dissertations and theses. You need a subscription, but you might be able to get access through a university research library or by signing up for a free trial.

Unless your employer requested you do this verification why should you care? Your employer could request that your coworker arrange for transcripts be sent to your employer.
