Everywhere you look. There was a promo on 60 Minutes this evening, about a degree mill segment on the Dan Rather news tomorrow, Monday. I didn't see it. From the way it was described to me, there seems to have been an interview with Alan Contreras. I do hope so. Or perhaps it is George Gollin. Or both.
It is here: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml Phony College Diplomas Vince Gonzales reports on an increasing number of people who are earning phony degrees from shady Internet sources, and reveals some top federal officials who have bogus diplomas on their resumes. Watch Video
I missed the broadcast but saw it here: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/eveningnews/main3420.shtml The broadcast reported that a report on federal employees with diploma mill degrees will be submitted to Congress tomorrow.
They showed a Columbia State University degree...I have one of those!! I wonder what Police has to say about exposing Pacific Western University as a degree mill. I must admit that I don't think it is fair to say Pacific Western University is an outright mill. I called them a few years ago and asked them to explain the difference between the CA program and the Hawaii program. They said the CA program requires some real coursework and the Hawaii program degree is based on previous experience. It does appear to have some standards but you which school do you think most people get a degree from?
I thought that it was an excellent report piece! It appears to me that over the past couple years with the good old ODA and similar laws being passed in many states that the tide is turning against the academic frauds. If the federal government really does crack down on academic frauds in its own ranks then a huge pool of potential customers will dry up. This should hasten other states to follow in the path of Oregon and company. P.S. It was fun seeing Mr. Contreras on TV, one of the super heroes fighting academic fraud.
NBC Evening News also ran a segment on diploma mills in the government this evening in their "Fleecing of America" segment. Sen. Collins was very prominent in the segment. After seeing the CBS video clip I liked the CBS segment better. John
