Is Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) becoming the next popularity? There are properly more than one hundred universities and colleges across the globe offering completely online or hybrid program. It seems to be cash cows for these academic institutions. What do you think? https://www.online-phd-programs.org/best-online-dba-programs/
A few weeks ago I posed a similar question about the MBA. Why do we have so many and why does everyone get one? On a smaller scale the same questions and answers could be applied to the DBA.
There is a high demand for this as many people are planning for retirement and thinking about a teaching career as a retirement option for cash on the side on top of a pension. At least this the reason that was given to me by many people that are doing one. Others feel that it can give an edge for top executive positions. The other trend is to avoid the tag DBA and call it executive PhD. Some people don't like the DBA title.
I just noticed that the University of Cumberlands' Executive Ph.Ds are more expensive than the regular Ph.Ds in the same disciplines. Strange!
So the bachelors is the new HS diploma and the masters is the new bacheors. At what point does the doctorate become the new masters, or are we already there?
I think it depends somewhat on discipline. Prior to the advent of the MBA the "business degree" was really economics. Then the MBA became the "applied degree", which was arguably a tad easier in some cases than economics. The applied degree became common and then easier with the advent of accelerated / executive programs. Seems like the same model is evolving. PhD to DBA to reproduction to executive DBA.
I do not think that the DBA programs are the cash cows as much as the MBA programs are. In no way to I regret pursuing my MBA because it has assisted me in becoming Assistant Vice President at my financial institution but goodness there are SO MANY MBA programs now that it is insane.
