Hi, I've been gathering information on COSC and Excelsior for quite a while. I have finally decided to go with COSC. I have an AA (FL - Spanish) and AAS (Communications Technology) with over 150 credits all together. Basically, I want to have an Individualized Studies concentration linking the Spanish and Communications courses. Can anyone out there give me any examples of what you have turned in to meet the essay requirement for Individualized Studies? I use many, many things from those two subjects daily in my job so hopefully the essay won't be too difficult. By my estimation I shouldn't (fingers are crossed) require any additional classes or tests to matriculate; I thought I'd go ahead and start on the essay while I wait for the official transcript evaluation. Also, I completed a College Mathematics course to fulfill the requirement for both of my associate's degrees. Will COSC accept College Math or do they ask for College Algebra to fulfill their math section? This board has been a great help in encouraging me to finally make this decision. Thanks in advance for any replies I get!
I used the General Math CLEP for my BS from COSC. You said you have 150 credits, how many are upper credit? I will post my essays, the rejected one and the accepted one, in the next week or so.
I haven't calculated them recently, but I would say at least 30 are upper-level. I'm sure that 15 are for Spanish, and the rest are communications and sociology (I would have to look at my transcripts to be sure). Thanks for posting the essays. That is the only part of this I'm worried about!
I took a 100-level course called "Introduction to Mathematics" that they accepted. I've found them very reasonable about accepting transfer credit and applying it where it could be most useful. -=Steve=-
That sounds very similar to the class I took. If they accept my class for that requirement I will be doing a happy dance (I don't like math if you can't tell)!
I haven't been here in a while, but I thought I would update my situation anyway. First, COSC did not accept my Intro to College Math class for the Quantitative Analysis requirement. Even though I was able to use that class to get both my associate's degrees, COSC says that the level is too low and the material too easy to count toward that requirement. All together, 134 of my credits were accepted and applied toward a Bachelor of Science degree. At this time, I need a math class, a philosophy/ethics class, and two more upper-level classes for my concentration. I plan to take COSC's Math 101, COSC's PHIL 485 (which fills 2 requirements at once) and take the DANTES exam for Organizational Behavior. As long as my concentration rationale gets approved (I'm combining Spanish with Management classes now), I will be good to go. Just wanted to say thanks to anyone who pointed me toward COSC. This is much shorter than the degree I started at Park University last year!
