I'm set to see it this evening. I am basically familiar with the process of electing anew Pope and I have few illusions about the universal purity and piety of senior Church officials. On the other hand, the Papacy is incredibly old, possibly the oldest continuing Western institution in existence (not counting the Church herself). They must be doing something right?

Apostolic succession is possibly the oldest continuing Western institution in existence, of which the Papacy is one example, if not, IMHO, the most inspiring.

That said, I have enjoyed some pope-related films.

    1. The Two Popes, a 2019 film about Benedict XVI and Francis, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, was really great.
    2. Saving Grace, a 1986 film starting Tom Conti as a newly installed younger pope who has a crisis of faith and goes on walkabout in Southern Italy to the alarm of his handlers at the Vatican, was both funny and meaningful.

Would that make him a loose canon?
