Can anyone tell me exactly how the CLEP general exams are graded? I ordered and received the Princeton Review book, I'm still waiting for the Official CLEP Guide. I just need to know if doing well on the Cracking the CLEP sample tests is indicative of one being ready to sit the exams. For example, on the sample Natural Sciences, English and Math tests, I got between 80 and 90% of the answers correct. On the Humanities and Social Sciences tests, I got betweem 65 and 70% correct. I also plan on taking the CLEP Spanish exam. The study guide only has 50 questions and I got 48 right. I don't know how to convert the number of right answers to a score, and I'd like to know what percentile I fall into before scheduling the exams. Thanks.

  2. John,

With those scores you should be fine. I have taken the Humanities general exam and scored 76/80 - this is a scaled score, not an absolute. From what I have found, if you can answer about 1/2 the sample questions right you should score 50/80 (the pass grade).

It seems that most institutions grant a pass/fail score only for the CLEP General Exams (as opposed to the Subject Exams). If you are only getting a P/F grade then a 51 is as good as a 71.

    Cheers,
