I recently requested a credit review at Charter Oak for my 20 year old tech school credits. I received the results today and I am shocked to say the least. The results indicate that 71 out of 120 credits towards a BS in Individualized Studies will be transferable.

Before I get too excited and send away a $1300 check to matriculate, does anyone have any experience with COSC and their initial credit transfer evaluation? Are the initial results and the results upon matriculating similar, or can there be significant differences?

    Thanks in advance.

My experience is that they'll honor their evaluation.

    Good luck,

How many credits did they reject and in what subjects?

    Sentinel,

To answer your question, and to provide information to any other tech school graduates, here is my background and the results of COSC’s credit review.

In the late 80’s, I graduated from DeVry Technical Institute’s Electronics Technician Program. This program totaled 92 credit hours - all but 6 credits were technical in nature. Over the past few years, I considered having these credits evaluated, but I did not because I thought no more than a handful would be transferable. I am now at a point in my career that I cannot progress further with out a degree. I considered all of the “big three” but eliminated TESC and Excelsior because both have restrictions on the age of technical credit used in a concentration. I chose COSC’s BS in Individualized Studies (Technology and Management) program because they do not limit the age of the credits and it appeared that this concentration would make an efficient use of my credits.

The results of COSC’s credit review does not indicate what credit will be used in a particular area, it is a simply a summary of what is needed and what is completed. In my case, my earned credits will cover the following areas:

General Education – 37 credits are needed, 6 are completed.
Concentration – 36 credits are needed, 18 are completed.
Electives – 47 needed, all are completed.

The review indicates that I must complete nearly all of the general education requirements, which I should be able to complete with exams. I also must complete 18 credits in my concentration, but it is not clear exactly what is needed and what has been covered. I hope that 18 remaining credits are all on the management side. It also indicates that I must have 18 upper level credits, but it does not specify if any of these have already been fulfilled.

That's cool, assuming that your concentration requirements are on the management side, then you should be able to complete your degree entirely through examination if you wish. Your general eds you can take care of through CLEP, and your concentration requirements through Excelsior Challenge Exams. There are upper division Excelsior exams, so even if that's what you're missing you should still be able to do it that way.
