Can I Teach French at a Community College

Dear all,

I have recently moved to Florida from France. I have a masters degree in business administration and finance from a French university, and I would like to teach french. Would that be possible ?

Post Secondary Degree Transcript = the official record of marks / grades you were awarded in all courses of your University degree program.

Asmalicious, in order to teach at a community college in the South, you pretty much have to have 18 hours of graduate study within a subject (in this case French). If I'm not mistaken, those hours need to be from an American university. This is going to be true of just about any class where the student is receiving college credit.

Now, you may be able to teach like personal enrichment French courses to adults or those interested in the subject after hours, i.e. afternoons/evenings. For example, I took a sign language course once where the gentleman had no official qualifications other than he had been teaching sign language as a hobby for many years. Here, as a native French speaker, you would be perfectly qualified to teach those classes.

The toughest part of breaking into academia in the U.S. is being qualified on paper, so the powers that be can check the "box" and move on. If you don't have them already, you may want to look for a cheap place to pick up 18 hours in French stateside. These will be easy for you, I imagine, and you'll probably be thinking, "Hey, I could teach this class the whole time," but in the end you would have your necessary hours to teach.

Also, it might help to contact the school that you want to teach at, and ask what specific qualifications might be necessary, or unnecessary.
