“The number of immigrants added to the labor force every year is of a magnitude not seen in this country for over a century,” one American president wrote. And Donald Trump has been branded a racist and fear-monger for similar remarks.

But the words above came from a different president — Barack Obama, in his book “The Audacity of Hope.” Appealing to America’s working class, he went on: “If this huge influx of mostly low-skill workers provides some benefits to the economy as a whole — especially by keeping our workforce young, it also threatens to depress further the wages of blue-collar Americans and put strains on an already overburdened safety net.”

“Do not insist that political leadership must be more honorable than is possible or likely. In fact, do not insist upon anything at all pertaining to the external world. Insist upon your own honor and decency. That will have to be enough.”

That too often does have to be enough.

Distraction. When Black America gets worked up about "influx of mostly low-skill workers" instead of wondering how "low-skill" niche is still predominantly black, so much so that newcomers with no connections and limited English, and in some cases no legal status, are still serious competition for American-born people of color - who benefits? Exactly.

Black America is way smarter than this. It's White America I'm worrying about.
Also, psst: no one advocates for more illegal immigration. It's about whether some people already here should get some civil rights. Also, whether people from "sh*thole countries" are "real Americans" or not. TRump admin went after refugees, people with temporary protection status, DV lottery winners, and "chain migrants" (people who got PR status using the same process as his own in-laws, recently). All of these people are in the country l e g a l l y. Most have skin darker than the median Trump voter. Going after "illegal immigrants" is just a rhetorical device.
