    Hi Jim,

Thanks for helping to show I haven't completely gone off my rocker !!!

In fact, I've privately sent information that may help the author(s) make any judgement on the BG14 clip art issue.

Apart from anything else, what does this say ?

Perhaps less about other countries themselves in the way you suggested (since their approach is very well known - or should be by now), but more about the different standards that can apply. And quite reasonably, too, under the circumstances concerned, eg. as would also be true with the North American Amish or perhaps Mormons with their sincerely held and consistently practised views.

Surely those involved in DL really do need to think about their world-wide audience and allow for a wide range of readership ?

My first example here was some Western teaching material I reviewed which explained inventory management and control using ladies' lingerie department store examples.

No problem to adjust to local sensitivities and find some other product lines. All it takes is an awareness of how different audiences might appreciate things and the common sense to respond in kind.

Maybe that's not too much to ask of our DE Gurus as well ????

Sorry if I don't respond to the tripe in this thread from GOS members Steve etc and GOS wannabes like Byran etc.

I wonder when they'll ever have something constructive to say about anything in the real world ? Again, I won't be holding my breath.

But who knows, Jim - maybe even they will have learned something from these posts (yours and mine, anyway).

Speaking of the real world, the British Army moved in on Tuesday past my Mum's house to start the grizzly work of getting Foot and Mouth Disease under control - it was found on a local farm only hours before.

Several of my friends have farms within the 3km "cull zone", so a bad day for all. One friend e-mailed me at the sorrow of losing a herd they had bred through several generations of farmers and many generations of animals.

    So regards, but not cheers,

    Neil

I checked my source for all such arcanity (my emoticon mug {g}) and it lists the smiley for sarcasism as ":->". I will probably still stick with the grins {g}, evil grins {eg}, and very evil grins {veg}, though I'm becoming more and more fond of that [IMG].

Now we're in the topic of "wannabes?"

Building a webpage with incorrect information for the consumers, and at the same time, favoring your mickey-mouse Ph.D from Century "university" are not exactly constructive in this case.

If anybody is unclear about what's going on, read Mr. Hynd first post. Obviously, it's more than just a whine on the pictures in the 14th Bear's guide. What were you saying about John being a Journalist???

I'll tell you what Mr. Hynd, my degree is from the University of British Columbia. Why not include CU on your distance-learning webpage?

Like Steve once said, credibility is the key in many cases. In this case, your Century school mickey-mouse Ph.D won't cut it.

I was raised Mormon and have many Mormon relatives. I think I can safely say that few Mormons would think that the old ink drawings were in poor taste.

Sorry Neil but you just reponded.

Oops above - the "reply" screwed up !!!

Bill .... on your two points:-

Point (1): you missed the point.

Point (2): you missed the point.

    Two points:

    1. Hardly a stealth drift in the title. It's been called that in the ng for a while. Likely it has more to do with the public now understanding that there is this thing called distance learning out there. I don't notice any difference because of the title.

    2. I've always seen John list his employment as "writer" and not journalist. As a matter of fact, he lists it as "writer" on this website. Not that it matters much one way or the other. I don't quite see being a journalist as a bad thing.

By the way, the name is "Mariah".

I'm so glad you pointed out the potential problems of taking this book with me on my next trip to Iraq. It could cause as large an international incident as vomiting on a prime minister.

Another situation you did not point out is that one should keep the book away from one's significant other. The last thing any relationship needs is accusations that one finds engravings of 19th century coresetted young ladies showing cleavage a preferrance to a real live coresetted 19th century corsetted young ladies showing cleavage. In my particular situation, I decided to keep the book out in the open where it would likely not be noticed.

However, I find it interesting that you did not mention the picture of the naked bear, with legs crossed in a decidedly modest way, as a potential problem. I believe Donald Duck was accused of similar immorality because of his counter revolutionary insistence on not wearing pants.

As for the content of the book, I found it, as previous editions, to be quite helpful. I've already used it in discussions with a couple of people in my group looking at various DL options for obtaining a degree. It's interesting how the ads/websites of schools can sucker in even people of a cynical nature, such as those that work in technical support.

IMHO, unaccredited schools choose their words carefully to give the semblence of career value where none really exists. Since this is a semi-free market, management of such schools likely feel empowered to rip-off, in my opinion, as many people as they can dupe into believing they are making a purchase with some value. So, it could be said, in a way, that unaccredited degree mills schools do provide an education- of sorts. The money paid can be considered, in a way, tuition, to learn how to make better choices.

So, while I may not agree with someone's opinion that there is a sucker born every minute, and that most of the 'mail in a resume get a degree, gold fillagree extra' schools are performing a needed service, I do have to allow such people to express their opinions. Just as they need to allow me to express the opinion that people who dupe others from their hard earned money through dubious means are bottom dwelling scum suckers.

I'm so glad we live in a civilized society.

    Russ
