Hello, This sounds and looks insane as I type it. My husband who has a degree in Economics and a second degree in Liberal Studies may have to acquire a third degree in Math. This has to be done through testing and quickly. Price is also an issue since he is already in a graduate program. My brain is on overload so specifics are appreciated. Hille
Not if the guy is not good at math.... But I guess that is not the issue if he is ready to test out a degree in math...
Thanks for the immediate suggestions. I will get the GRE study guide tomorrow and see what he thinks. Hille
Third undergraduate degrees are frowned upon and Excelsior requires justification for the pursuit of said third degree (no pun). So do other schools but I don't know if that is up to individual schools or an RA thing. I also don't know if that's a U.S. thing. AFAIK, the Athabasca site says nothing about it.
From the excelsior catalog: If you have two degrees at the same level from Excelsior College or any other accredited institution and wish to pursue yet another degree at the same level, you must petition in writing to the dean of the school. The petition must cleary state your rationale for pursuing the additional degree, including what benefit the additional degree will provide you.
Are the first two degrees from the same school or from excelsior? Anyhow, why would a third degree be frowned upon anyhow? Just Curious......
Doesn't matter where the degrees were earned. If they're from "an accredited institution" then you must justify pursuing a third degree. I've seen similar restrictions in other college catalogs. They seem to believe that you should be moving on to graduate work and that's all I know of it. If what the student is preparing for doesn't specifically require a degree in a specific discipline then a certificate program in the desired discipline, atop the earned degrees, should suffice. I don't know if that's an Excelsior policy or a New York State Department of Education policy or an Ra policy. If Canadian or UK schools don't care how many undergraduate degrees you earn then one of those schools do the trick.
Not that I know, but I can only see them allowing it if the reason for the 3rd was a complete career change into nursing from accounting or something.
Alternate route teaching-NJ Good Morning. My husband is an alternate route teacher (age 51) . A math alternate route certification needs a math degree to back it up. In NJ there are many math jobs. This is where the question came from. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Hille
Re: Alternate route teaching-NJ Something you learn is that any rule can be waived. It all depends on whether you more need them or they more need you. Negotiate. Make a proposal.
Another thing you learn is "What they don't know doesn't hurt them." What if you have 2 degrees, but send a college a subset of your transcripts showing only one? I don't think that's fraudulent, and I don't think they would revoke a degree on any grounds other than fraud. Of course, if the application form explicitly says "List every degree" or "Send every transcript", then you couldn't do that. ("What they don't know doesn't hurt them" is from an old German proverb Was ich nicht weis macht mich nicht heiß = "What I don't know doesn't make me hot." This rhymes in the German: weis is pronounced like English "vice", and rhymes with heiß. Physicists prefer Was ich nicht weis macht mich heiß = "What I don't know makes me hot", which describes the contrast between information and entropy.)
Rules ist rules and the Excelsior thesaurus has the withholding of prior college work as being equivalent to fraud. I believe that to be a U.S. standard. And if I've read the thing correctly they may indeed withhold or revoke the degree. Does anyone know what the deal is in Canada? Could the hille hubby take a third three or four year undergraduate degree at a school like Athabasca?
From a brief review of the NJ licensure requirements, it looks to me like it may not be necessary to actually have a bachelor's degree in the subject taught, as long as you do have a degree and also have 30 credit hour in that subject area. It might be worth giving the NJ Dept. of Ed. a call and explaining the situation. New Jersey Teacher Licensure Requirements
Thanks Hello and thanks for the input. Bob has a degree in Economics and Liberal Studies. My idea was to try and submit the Economics degree with the Praxis score. He hasn't taken it yet. Then move toward a math certification. He doesn't have 30 credits of pure math since they are not counting a variety of business statistics and accounting classes. He needs some cheap testing options. I mentioned before he is in grad school so time and money are a consideration. Ironically he got his second degree for GPA improvement and the GPA was lowered this year. Hille
Canadians and 3 bachelor degrees Hi, I'm Canadian and have three Bachelor's degrees. I completed the three degrees in 5 years on campus. Athabasca lets you count 2 years of credit from a previous degree towards a new one. I don't recall seeing anything against three Bachelor's degrees from Athabasca. I've taken 6 Athabasca courses and counted them towards my regular degrees. Re: Canadians and 3 bachelor degrees Thank you, Ramona. That may indicate a new option for some here.
What if there was a long time froam between the 2nd and third degree (eg: 15-20 years). Would that make a difference, since many school have a time limit in accepting transfer credits from other instutions??????
