This is correct. They are not "recognized" by CHEA in any meaningful way, they just participate in one of their working groups.

It's pretty easy to miss that distinction. I have seen some people who I believe are sincere in their representation that ASIC is a CHEA recognized agency.

ASIC has limited UK recognition for what it does in the UK. It appears they may or may not accredit degrees in the UK as they are not an institutional accreditor.

They do appear to accredit schools with degree programs internationally but I am understanding those don't enjoy any sort of status with the UK the government as the equivalent of accredited degrees.

If I recall correctly there appear to be some people connected with ASIC who have credible credentials.

I would think they have certain aspects that make them a far better bet than ACI and some of the other US based unrecognized accrediting agencies.

Lots of speculation and daydreaming here.

ASIC is a quality control organization with a decidedly non-academic bent.

Forget about CHEA. First, ASIC isn't American. Second, CHEA recognition comes with the additional power of indicating who is and who is not a recognized grantor of degrees. Again, that's not really ASIC's gig. (Even though some operators seem to be misleading the public in that regard.)

In short, CHEA recognizes agencies who (a) exercise quality control and (b) determine who issues recognized (accredited) degrees. ASIC does the former but does not do the latter. Thus, CHEA isn't going to "recognize" them.
