My LL.M. came from a DEAC school that doesn't "do" formal commencement. They do host a sort of reception every now and again for recent graduates where they provide a photo op and loan you a doctor robe. I've never been.

Anyway...years ago, (having no life), I discovered that most LL.M. schools put their graduates in the "traditional" J.D. garb (which made a kind of sense, I guess?) Now, however, (still having no life) I have identified a trend! More schools are following the example of the University of Washington William H. Gates School of Law (not that Bill Gates; his father) and draping their LL.M. grads in proper black Masters gowns with Masters hoods in the correct shade of purple!

So not only does the higher degree get "inferior" regalia, the LL.M. gets the exact same regalia as the M. Jur. and any other Law or jurisprudence related Masters.

Should I be outraged? Or mollified? Or depressed?

    Just sign me:

Just listen to the song, "Crack Up In Las Cruces" by Michael Martin Murphey. Guaranteed to cure what ails ya.

I suppose I would have to ask the following...

First, understanding that the degree is a "master's" should you be surprised? I think not... Especially if the classes are coded in the catalog as such. Presumably all students are already law school graduates. I would ask however if you are BILLED for masters or doctoral tuition rates.

Looking objectively, at least you get a ceremony, whereas multiple schools with graduate certificates or post-doc programs do not allow said "non-degree" students to attend commencement ceremonies... kind of a let down in my mind.
