  1. Real wackos... like from a certain "truth" seeking site, the address of which I will not mention, that consists of a bunch of people lurking on this board, piecing some information together and inaccurately recreating the life's history of some of our frequent non-anonymous posters. It's downright scary the things that they write, and it reaffirms that anonymity is the right decision for me.

Ah it's not so bad, it can be amusing to see pictures of some stranger on the "truth" site with the claim that it is a picture of me. Heck the worst that's happened to me is that wackos tried to get me fired from my job.

Which reminds me of another funny story. When I first moved to San Diego I was looking for a place to live. I went to one apartment that had really cheap rent. After seeing the place I was tempted but asked the apartment manager, "I hear this can be a bad neighborhood?"

He laughed and responded seriously. "It's not so bad. I've lived here for a couple years now and I've only been shot at once."

When he noticed our shocked look, he quickly added, "They missed me and it was only a .22 anyway."

Ha, in another thread I just said how much money me and my wife currently have and have implied at income, work, etc. I would never want to share that info if it was non anonymous; however, my name is actually Richard, but last name, I'll keep that to myself.

I hate most forums because they do get so rude, and it is because of anonymity. I find the whole thing disgusting. I just don't understand why people are so rude--I guess image is everything.

But to answer the question, I would still post, just not always as much information as I do now.

What is online anonymity? I suppose there are degrees of anonymity, each of which lessen the likelihood that one would be recognized at the grocery store or the workplace.

  5. Well that's a relief

I can identify with the apartment manager. I worked in a High School that probably should have had its own recruitment offices for the Bloods and Crips (yep, THOSE Bloods and THOSE Crips). It's odd how easily you become accustomed to it all. When fights would break out, I became used to stepping over students while going on to my next class. I started to become reasonably fluent in gang signs, terminology and came to understand the symbolism in much of the grafitti. I'm not saying, however that I miss any of it.

    Friend: How was work?
Maniac Craniac: Well, my client threw a stapler the principal and got into a fight with two rival gang members before being escorted away by a dozen police officers. So, overall, not too bad.
    Friend:
