Interesting perspective. I have worked for colleges of education in three states and know hundreds of education faculty through professional organizations. In the pst 15 years, I have only known one or two that prefer to be addressed as "doctor".

I have also worked for community colleges and have noted that faculty with doctorates at those institutions tend to use the title more often. I have also noticed that faculty with JD degrees who teach in subjects other than law tend to want to be addressed as "doctor".

I agree with Tony. I have taught at a few different community colleges, one state-run university and 2 private universities. Most EVERY collegue usually wants to be referred to with their first name.

However, I have found that instructors of entry level courses are more likely to "invoke" this PhD status. I asked a good friend of mine once about his "need" to be referred to as "Doctor" in class. He informed me that he never asks his "adult learner" type classes to use it ("doctor") but usually reserves this for in-coming freshmen type classes (BTW he teaches psychology at a local state college). He added that it gains instant respect from some of the "younger students." At the time I shrugged it of. Recently (this past fall), I had a student question me about why I was teaching (at the local university) without a PhD. I answered that I "bribed the Dean!" He stopped asking me about it but I was initially "put off" by the brashness of the question (the manner the student was out of line and sarcastic in nature).

Well that is just my 2 cents----
