We have discussed recently about the lack of rigour of some DL programs and the differences betweek B&M and DL schools. However, there is a new trend in some RA B&M schools of offerind quick DL solutions for MBA seekers. Take the following example of an MBA certificate in 8 weeks from Tulane University. Although the diploma granted has the word "certificate", how this works? do you get to use the letters MBA after your name also with this award? How about using the certificate in a CV?. Wouldn't this be considered deceptive for potential employers?. So what is the next trend? PhD certificates and M.Sc certificates?. It seems that B&M schools are also after the same market of DL schools, the market of students looking for a flexible and fast solution to their needs.

You've made a great point, because "MBA" could appear on the resume, which will trigger resume scanning software. "Mastering Certificate" also is ambiguous. Tulane is definitely walking the line...

What about my regionally accredited PowerPoint Certificate? Does this mean I am being deceptive by using the letters "PPC" after my name?

Certainly misleading, Russell. I'm sure almost everyone will think you are referring to the widely respected, Petroleum and Petrochemical College, in Chulalongkorn Soi12, Bangkok.

Anyway, the certificate in question is "conferred" as a, "Mastering Certificate in Business Administration – Management". I cannot see anything objectionable or misleading in that, . . . as long as "ing" and "Certificate" are not removed from the title. I agree though that replacing the awkward, "Mastering", with "Graduate" would do much to allay the suspicion that the title was chosen to mislead, or at least, was chosen to appeal to those who would use it to mislead.

Just keep the thing away from Russell :)

    Nothing New...

Do a quick Google search for MBA certificate (or mini MBA), and you’ll find programs at UCLA, Duke, San Jose State, etc. This type of executive education has been offered by top tear schools for years. Some are vocational in nature, others offer transferable units. DL institutions aren’t blind to the demand for this type of education either. For example, Touro now offers a “graduate certificate” in Emergency & Disaster Management.
