True...If you've been following my posts, you'll see I'm steering away from DETC alltogether.

I am doing it for both employability and self enrichment - but moreso for future employability. Right now I am fairly secure in my job, however, given the terrible recent events and overall market economy, the IT field has really dried up - especially in my area. So I'm trying to protect my future.

Yes, many of my recent posts will indicate my *swing* towards RA schools. Really, I was merely trying to gather information and knowledge about the DETC schools so I can make an educated decision. And that's what I was using this board for, and it *has* been very helpful.

Right now my credits are being evaluated at 2 RA schools. It's only a matter of time until I enroll at one of them.

Thanks for the input and advice.

When the women who run ACCIS accosted me at the DETC convention last year ("accosted" is my word; they said later they just wanted to be sure I understood a few things; I felt accosted), one of their messages is that founder Doctor Lloyd Clayton is no longer involved, and I should calm down. I don't know if this means he no longer owns it, or is just not involved on a regular basis, while pursuing his life (according to the ads for his other schools) of philanthropy and good works.

Things change. Sometimes even for the better. If Doctor Clayton (and his long-time major involvement with the awful World Association of Universities and Colleges) is truly no longer involved, and with a new school name so that the 'audit trail' of AICS and its "We cannot accept students living in our home state of Alabama" days is less findable, the likelihood of ACCIS meeting the needs of people who aren't planning to go on for a higher degree (where the DETC accreditation will be much less useful) are higher.

Somehow, in the arena of good names and bad names and names with baggage attached, I am thinking of my friend who is a major advocate for making diesel from agricultural products (very big in Missouri). His papers on the topic got little attention, until he proposed titling one, Where is Hitler Now that We Need Him -- the point being that Hitler launched the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, and the submarine fleet without benefit of a single oil well. Well that got him attention -- a small percentage of it even the right kind of attention.

    Re: DETC??

I would guess that for the most part the Civil Service would recognize DETC degrees. If hiring decisions for any specific position were based on the school reputation then you could be hurt by a DETC degree. Warning: I am not familar with Civil Service hiring practises, hence the term "guess".

RA is the gold standard and the commonly assumed standard for school accreditation within the USA. RA is not part of the government. It is regional organizations of the schools that self police themselves and make sure that the high standards expected in this country for college education are upheld. DETC is also an organization that is independent of the government. DETC is a national organization that originally focused on accrediting distance education vocational training programs.

Years ago the RA schools were not providing the distance education options that are now available. The unsatisfied demand for distance education spawned many schools of questionable quality. DETC stepped in to try and help the situation. Since then the RA system of schools is in a position to better service this demand.

DETC accreditation is second rate compared to RA. Add to that the problem that a few very marginal schools have been accredited by DETC and we have a situation where I believe that the second rate accreditation of DETC is probably now causing more harm than good in the general education arena.
