    Hi Quinn:

    Interesting, isn't it?

Here at degreeinfo, when a thread on this institution threatened to turn into a referendum on you, several of us were quick and vehement to spring to your defence. I consider myself in that number.

On another forum, a thread about this institution quickly turned into a festival of attacks and lies about me. No one defended me. What do you think that means? Since you have posted on both threads, your opinion would I think carry extra weight.

Best wishes to you and your family, especially to your esteemed wife from one who honours very greatly the culture of Iran, and deplores the cowardly racialist comment made elsewhere about her.

Janko muy fino y muy frio

(PS My apologies for starting a new thread. It is no longer consistent with my pledged word for me to post on the Marquess thread proper. You of all people I am sure will understand when a point d'honneur is involved.)

It's been one of those years, 2005 has. Certainly has. Full of tests, full of challenges.

Here are a few of the strategies I've personally tried over the year -- let's call them The 8 R's of an Unsuccessful Internet Fora Poster.

    • Reason

This strategy involves trying to use reason.
    • Rage

Yeah -- I've blown my stack.
    • Rebuke

When I see something I think is just plain wrong -- well, I've chastised.
    • Redaction

When I hit "reply" with quoting -- I've tried to cut out any personal content.
    • Retraction

When I've said something I ought not have -- I've endeavored to retract.
    • Repentance

When I've engaged in blowing my own stack -- I've endeavored to repent.
    • Reticence

Just ignored it, hoping it would go away.
    • Retreat

      Left.
    • Return

      Came back.
Other strategies have included singing opera (poorly), pulling out my hair, chain smoking, and interpretive dance.

Year's almost over. Time for the discovery of a 9th R?

(Addendum -- Rum. Haven't tried rum yet.)

You could do what I do: go to this site and sing along.

I didn't say it made sense, but it's a great way to blow off steam.

Hi Quinn: In A.J. Jacobs' book "The Smartest Man in the World" there is an interview with a man named Hoeflin in New York who edits some high-IQ newsletters. Thought you might be interested. Janko

That's a good point. Recognizing the other side -- and stating this -- another strategy for unsuccessful fora posting. :D

I still think I'll try some Rum before the year's done with -- it might work.

Ronald Hoeflin is the granddaddy of all the ultrahigh IQ associations. Before him -- it was mostly just Mensa -- an association I've never belonged to. His reputation in the ultrahigh IQ world is very good -- I've read some of his stuff -- but have never communicated with him directly, though many have.
