Except DETC is not accrediting doctoral degrees yet: Q. If an institution offers a Doctoral-level degree program, may it apply for accreditation? A. No. All of the institution's programs and degrees must qualify to apply. At the present time, the Commission's recognition by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation extends through the First-Professional degree level only. From: http://www.detc.org/frequentlyQust.html
The doctorate my not be accredited now, but it may be in the near future, according to the DETC: (Note: DETC’s scope of recognition by the U.S. Secretary of Education and CHEA is for courses and programs through the first-professional degree level. DETC will be seeking the U.S. Secretary of Education’s recognition of its expanded scope of activity to include professional doctorate degrees in late 2006.)
Agree with you TCord, but until DETC receives the authority to grant the recognition AND school receive this accreditation, I would be a bit wary. Bottom line: as of right now, the doctorate is unaccredited.
re; DECT EdD If one wants to use this for a school pay raise, better check with them first. I checked a local public community college and they said absolutely not acceptable even if DETC accredied. Regionally accredited only.
The Harrison Middleton University Doctor of Education program is one of two trial or pilot programs approved by the DETC. The other is Columbia Southern's DBA. This has been discussed before on this and other forums. RXI
re: EdD The Harrison Middletown catalog (p92) could hardly be more explicit "The College of the Humanities and Sciences, Harrison Middleton University is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). www.detc.org DETC’s scope of recognition granted by the U.S. Department of Education extends only through the First Professional Degree level. " NOT DETC accredited!
re: HMU EdD Here's what HMU says in response to an enquiry Yes, the Ed.D. at Harrison Middle University is DETC accredited. However, the program is not yet recognized by the US Dept. of Education. We are in the process of expanding our scope with them now. Let me know if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Nan Bayster Director of Accreditation
