Can anyone give me any info on Mansfield University? I found out that they offer a BA in art history online. Since art history is my major I am really limited on colleges that offer such a degree online. In fact, that is the only one that I have found in the U.S. that offers such a degree online. Is this University the way to go if I would like to perhaps teach art history at a university level? Of course in order to teach at a university level I will need a higher degree than a BA. I would like to be able to use this degree to transfer to a University to get a Masters degree and even go one step further that. Also I noticed that Mansfield is not listed in Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning. I would just like to make sure that I wouldn't be wasting my time and money at Mansfield. Any info on Mansfield would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Cali

I find them at Mansfield University click here .

I find that they are accredited by the Middle States Association at MSA listing for Mansfield click here .

It would seem that a degree from this school would be as useful as one from any other accredited university no one's ever heard of. Perhaps they have a reputation in one academic field or another, or in their geographical area. I do not know.

I also find in Bears' Guide (that you mention consulting) that Charter Oak State College (Connecticut) and Queens University (Canada) offer bachelor's degrees in Art History by distance learning. Charter Oak is one of the "Big Three" of distance learning by assessment. They can be accessed at Charter Oak click here .

    Good luck.

I attended Mansfield during my first year of college, back in 1963. The school is very legitimate. It started out as Mansfield State Normal School, then became Mansfield State Teacher's College, then Mansfield State College and finally Mansfield University of Pennsylvania.

The school is a Pennsylvania State-related University, as are several others, including the world famous Slippery Rock University.

They are primarily engaged in teacher education and have an outstanding music department.

I suspect that any program they offer would be good.

I don't have any personal experience with Mansfield. But they are a state university in Pennsylvania.

Here's the online BA in art history:

I'd like to thank you for directing our attention to this program, Cali. I have a personal interest in art history and had been totally unaware that this even existed. As you say, online art history programs are unusual and this seems like a very attractive opportunity.

If your goal is to get into graduate school in art history, my understanding is that many graduate departments want applicants either to have bachelors degrees in art history specifically, or else in a related subject with at least x-number of upper division credits in art history. A regionally accredited art history degree from a state university should fulfill these kind of admission requirements pretty handily. You could even make the DL aspect work in your favor if you can land some kind of museum related volunteer or docent position in your area while you are studying. That could turn into recommendations.

Again, thanks for pointing this out.
