8 students shot at SEPTA bus stop in Philadelphia: Police

"Eight students were shot, leaving one student in critical condition, after gunfire rang out at a SEPTA bus stop in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, according to Philadelphia police.

Multiple people opened fire as the students were attempting to board a bus at approximately 3:00 p.m., local time, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said in a press conference.

Bethel said three people exited a vehicle parked near the SEPTA bus stop and opened fire, shooting over 30 rounds toward the students as they were attempting to board the bus."

I dunno, Steve. Certainly not what people come to DI to hear, as I see it, at least. Beside the tragedy of dead, innocent young people, what got to me was the huge number of comments. I read far too many of them --- the racist vitriol against Blacks was incredible. Against both African-Americans and Black immigrants. Lots of fury. And fury at Joe Biden and Democrats for (it's said) not being tough enough on crime.

Should DI be giving room to this kind of sh*!-stirring? Can't see how any good will come of it.

Posting this kind of stuff here isn't exactly performing a public service. Ghoulish fear-mongering, hate-feeding and finger-pointing induced by sensationalist media is harmful. I say, zero tolerance here at DI.

@Lerner I would say exactly the same things if someone posted an article that I saw stirred up Anti-Semitic feelings in its audience.
Jews have known (and suffered) the full, horrible effect - exactly how this works, for many centuries -- culminating in the Holocaust.

I don't understand why you, of all people, posted this - and I don't want to. No misguided, specious explanations, please.

    Just stop it - OK?

I didn't have any bad intentions or racist views when posted this.

Lerner's post is fine. A mass shooting, while tragic, is newsworthy. The report, from ABC News (US) syndicated via Yahoo, is fine. What Johann identifies correctly as not fine, user comments at Yahoo, is ancillary.

    ?????????

It's a news story, and it does absolutely none of what you claim it does.

There's nothing wrong with your post. You're not responsible for how other people choose to mischaracterize it.

Not just Yahoo, but basically comments anywhere quickly become a far right cesspool. It's like O'Sullivan's First Law works in reverse for comments.

This is a perfect example of why I stopped posting. The strange, unprovoked, unnecessary attacks and animated outbursts from a few people just became too silly to deal with. The cliquish behavior of some was also another issue. Just stepping away and reading here and there over time, I could better see who was part of that clique and put them on all on my ignore list, from one guy who seems to respond to almost everything and goes bonkers often, to another who doesn't understand when he has crossed a line and actually attacks you as if it's your fault that he did it, and another two who hit like on almost everything the other two posts no matter what they post. It's just weird.

Using the ignore list feature is not something I would normally ever do, but at some point with some people you just have to realize and accept that there is clearly something wrong with them and the best you can do is stop engaging with them. The ignore list feature makes that easier to do. The only thing I wish the feature had was a settings option to turn off the "Show Ignored Content" link inside threads so even that wouldn't be there to entice you to hit it and read. Maybe someday.
