"Authorities contacted a man in Bellevue after he called the Air Force Museum offering to donate a military-grade rocket that belonged to his late neighbour. He said that his neighbour had bought the item from an estate sale.

Bellevue police bomb squad technicians said it was a Douglas AIR-2 Genie, an unguided air-to-air rocket that is designed to carry a 1.5kt W25 nuclear warhead. They said there was no warhead attached and there was no danger of an explosion.--------
The Genie was the first nuclear-armed air-to-air weapon.

It said it was the “most powerful interceptor missile ever deployed by the US Air Force”.

Wait... does that mean the goal was to blow up another plane using a nuke?

Might be used to destroy another nuclear missile instead of a plane.... I don't know....

That makes sense... although I'm a lifelong civilian, so take that for the not-much that it's worth!

You could probably take out a fleet of airplanes with an air-to-air nuclear missile. Spreading nuclear waste all over the place sounds like potential problem. I guess their idea was that it would be used on planes carrying nuclear weapons so that would reduce it to a minor concern?

I miss those stores -- you know the ones. In the 50s they were called "War Surplus." In the 60s-70s they were called "Military Surplus." After that, they were gone.... You could probably have found a lot of this stuff there... along with canteens, boots and thick, itchy uniform pants... I bought binoculars there once. I was about 11. Not very good - certainly not military spec. - but they only cost $1, so...

As far as I know, it was planned to use them above the ocean.

Not for use above the Kremlin?

I don't much like the click bait headline. "Inert Nuclear Missile" comes waaay too close to "Inert Nuclear Weapon"
