I can definitely agree with that. The thing is many "country" folk in the rest of the US think they have a lot in common with "southerners" but in reality there is a wide gulf between them. I was raised in the South (Virginia) and have lived in several Southern States ("We're with you all the way...." --- does that ring a bell for you, if so I know for sure you grew up in the South?) and I can tell almost immediately when I meet a "Southerner" and a "wannabe".

I just ask them what the typical Southern New Years dinner consists of. Most people outside of the South don't know the answer.

Sure...if a reputation of serving trust fund kids is considered a better reputation, by all means, attend CU. Go Rams! ;)

In all seriousness, most schools in the list above don't have to worry about reputation even if there is another school in the state that may be more highly regarded. With regards to Mizzou vs. Arkansas State, there is a big difference in terms of reputation, but I wouldn't make the "of" vs. "State" thing a rule.

And who are the CU Rams?

Colorado State University'a mascot is the Rams and their rival is CU. NW Learner was taking a dig at UC because the school has a reputation of having a lot of wealthy, entitled, ski bums among their students and he is clearly a CSU fan/alum. Just a little friendly dig from CU's cross-state rival.

    My point exactly.

Not sure I understand, Ted. As Tekman said, my comment was just a dig at CU. There are no CU Rams obviously.

And George Mason University was spun off of the University of Virginia, within living memory, even. But few would argue it's not one of the most well regarded universities in the country at this point. Things change.

That's true. But VCU has come to play the role relative to the University of Virginia that most people would expect between the elite University of X and the accessible, sturdy X State University. VCU is a large public research university in the state capital that is reasonably accessible for a lot of students from all backgrounds. Virginia State University, meanwhile, is a much smaller institution that, as an HBCU, was founded to serve a specific group rather than the state as a whole, and it's a ways outside the capital to boot.

As for Virginia Tech, that's in a class by itself. And yes, I mean that as a compliment. Actually, it's a testament to how good public higher education in Virginia is that we can even have this discussion.

I guess this is how you can tell how different Northern Virginia is from the rest of Virginia -- I'm from Arlington, so all I can do is guess that it probably involves sweet tea mixed with moonshine, and a deep fried entree from an animal that you killed yourself. :sasmokin:

I know that. There are the Colorado Buffalos and the Colorado State Rams. There is no such thing as a CU Ram.

No, not it does not, Yankee. The South ends at Richmond.

That's the last Southern city along the line, anyway. I don't think it's a cultural fault line, exactly, it's more like the transition away from the cultural North begins around Woodbridge and continues to Fredericksburg or thereabouts. (Or, by Northern reckoning, the Occoquan and Rappahannock, respectively.)

If you're in Mississippi, that dinner better include blackeyed peas!

This reminds me of a survey someone did, where common phrases and geography were compared, and wouldn't be surprised if it was posted on here somewhere.

There was the phrase about "what do you call it when the sun shines while it is raining?"
Answer: The devil's beating his wife (at least, that is what that is called in Mississippi).

Here's another: what do you call those birds that scavenge and eat dead animals?
    Answer: We called them buzzards.

There were quite a few other phrases, but those two immediately came to mind.

To get back on this topic, Arkansas State University is not on the same level as the University of Missouri.

I believe the LSU vs. University of Louisiana example is a really good one. LSU has a way bigger name than the University of Louisiana system, even though the University of Louisiana name is seen all over the state when you drive across it.

TEKMAN made a great series of generalizations, but the LSU example proves that it does not hold true in all cases. (Of course, he did not say all cases.):

Not sure I understand your comment then. As Tekman said, I was just taking a dig at CU. Obviously there is no such thing as the CU Rams.

Sorry if this post appears twice. I thought I had posted it this morning and it was just in review (because of my low post count), but maybe I didn't actually submit it...

Ah yes, but in what order would the following schools go?

Texas Tech vs Texas A&M vs University of Texas vs Texas State

    And I'm not talking football...

  17. TEKMAN

    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

I did not know my comment leads to higher debates. I only compare most of the schools under University of.... vs ..... State University. I did not compare the rest of state public institutions.
I would rank for these public institution systems (not individual institution) on reputation:
    1- University of Texas
    2- Texas A&M University
    3- Texas Tech University
    4- Texas State University

If you throw University of Houston in there, then University of Houston System is comparable to Texas Tech System.
