Let me ask you a question, North:

When employers, graduate programs and licensing bodies specify accredited degrees, why do you suppose they are doing that?

What is accreditation? What is it intended to tell us? Why do so many people consider it important?

I think that you are faced with a dilemma whichever way you go. You can't argue that accreditation performs an important function and simultaneously tout loopholes for evading it.

 

Well, I was with you right up to this point. I can't imagine a system of 50 states, all setting their own individual standards and then expecting the other 49 states to accept those standards at face value. Imagine the differences between Massachusetts, New York and Hawaii. Utter confusion.

No problem Tony. I've stated more than once that one of the more valuable things I've learned from being a faithful BG reader is not to question anything at face value. Even if someone doesn't have any interest in DL, reading BG will open their eyes to fake degrees and the like, which is worth the price alone, IMO.

Without BG, I probably wouldn't have bothered to check that my twin's pediatrician graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, my own primary care physician from George Washington University, my wife's OB/GYN from UMass Medical School, our dentist from Tufts University, and my optometrist from Ohio State. I now check everything!

I don't think that anyone can, though the school's behavior creates serious suspicions. Nevertheless, you seem to be pronouncing them RA-equivalent. How is it that you can do that North, when you admit yourself that you can't speak about their quality? Are you suggesting that accreditation has nothing to do with quality?

If I might step in here...abroad there is a perception that American universities, other than the older well accepted universities, are a touch shady. I applied to work in Africa for a three year term as a teacher and the international volunteer agency that interviewed and eventually hired me grilled me on where I took my degrees. I asked why and was told that they were very concerned with anyone having degrees from the USA. The feeling was that a good many degrees from the US were less than acceptable on an international standard.

And I really must disagree with this statement ...

How could anyone make a generalised claim like that? What are "most fields"?

Checking out a site above referenced I was beseiged by an array of foul language. While degreeinfo runs a much cleaner ship, such encounters as I experienced on the other forum nearly enduces one to avoid discussion groups entirely..and I am no puritan. The tones and invectives and slanderous speech there made me immediately leave as it sounded more like a hell's angel's brawl than a forum for the serious discussion of distance ed!

I believe that Sam Xavier, (including the rest of his aliases) is a pedophile. Send the process server, I will be happy to accept service and see you in court.

Unfortunately this clown, Sam Xavier, or whomever he really might be, has been dumping hundreds, no make that thousands of messages on the a.e.d. board, mostly aimed at John Bear, and each of which repeats the same, tired old message. He never identified himself, never answers questions about himself and just responds by repeating the same garbage. So, I finally just called him an asshole, which I think truely fits. I also said that I thought he was either a junior high school student with too much time on his hands or more probably a pedophile. That resulted in lots of profanity from him, and insults directed at me and my wife. So, now I am the target of his rath rather than John Bear (hear that John, you OWE ME, BIG TIME!!). In the last set of messages he accused me of being with the Mafia..... (Which I might be, but if I told you the truth I might have to kill you, so I will keep it a secret)... clearly he is not the brightest bulb in the string and I suspect that he will eventually lose interest and move on to someone else. But, if anyone really knows who he is, I would love to hear about it. I do have ways of making his life just as interesting as he has made a.e.d.

Acceptable Language ???

It is indeed sad when one feels one must use such language to emphasize a point. This is especially true among those who are pro-higher education. One would think that as the level of education increases, one's vocabulary would also increase.

I was not intending on suing you. It's just my Uncle is an attorney and I know that there are professional rules of conduct that you are supposed to adhere to.

From what I saw on alt.edu, you actually threatened Xavier with physical violence and now are calling him a pedophile in public. Is this the behavior of a licensed attorney? Do you realize that your someone can file an ethics complaint against you?

They would laugh that complaint out of existence. And, I believe that I said that Sam needed a good ass-kicking for his behavior, I don't think that is a threat. Honestly, he isn't worth the trouble. But, amazingly, things have been very quiet over in A.E.D. for the past couple of days. Either he is on vacation or maybe he has seen the light, or maybe he is afraid that I WILL send the mafia after him.....doesn't matter, at least he shut up.
