When I was little, I remember my grandfather taking me to the local soda fountain. I would have a chocolate egg cream and he would have the vanilla. Those were the days..... I wonder if any of those sodas taste similar. Hmm...
I don't know if it is exactly the same thing, but I remember getting chocolate "Yahoo" all of the time. Came in a bottle, but I don't think I remember it being carbonated.
You probably mean "Yoo-Hoo". Yoo-Hoo isn't really a chocolate soda because it's non-carbonated; it's more like chocolate milk, only non-dairy. Still readily available, though my impression is that it is more popular in certain parts of the country (like New York) and less popular in others (like California).
I always called that stuff "chocolate water". I haven't seen it in years, however. I guess that's a good thing, since I strangely found myself liking it, even though it always felt so wrong.
Bear's Guide to a Pretty Darn Good Chocolate Egg Cream 75% A&W Cream Soda (regular or diet) 25% milk 1/4 cup Torani Chocolate flavoring (regular or sugar-free) (BevMo has it) Stir gently Mmmmmmmm.
I remember drinking chocolate soda when I was a kid in PA. Once we moved to AZ I never remember seeing it again. My daughter drinks Yoo-Hoo most days with her lunch at school. I would love to try a chocolate soda again, I had forgotten all about that treat of my childhood! Thanks for the memories!
One thing stored in my chocolate soda memory bank is that a friend who lives in Detroit says that when he took the tour of the Vernors Ginger Ale factory, they were offered a sample of chocolate-flavored Vernors. I tried adding some of that Torani chocolate flavoring to a can of Vernors. As I recall, it was better suited for stripping varnish.
PS: A search finds nothing official about chocolate Vernors . . . but at weirdsodareview.com, a number of people enthusiastically write about the Detroit Brown Cow: half Vernors and half chocolate milk. Fred Meyer, here I come.
