    Re: Re: Re: hard verses

This was intended as a bit of Calvinistic/Arminian humor, Bill.

Like you, I shall spend the rest of my life studying--I think I've been elected to do so. ;)

Unless of course you are in the theoretical camp which believes that only the unsaved are called to give account for their lives which will be revealed at judgement as the others have already had their sins expunged by Christ. :)

Not being Wesleyan I yet deem myself as base and not made perfect by that distinctive wesleyan doctrine of entire santification.

Indeed we are told to control our tongues. You are right.

However, you would be wrong to suppose that phrase was here contrived for emphasis. It rather was provoked by true emotion, by years of sorrow over the hopeless narrowmindedness of overly restrictive creeds , often creeds with only superficial exegetical bases and by what such do to those who would have served out of a heart which is if not entirely pure at least is willing. The example given, Russell, was the occasion of not being able to teach in an "evangelical" school because I doubted that the perfect of 1 Cor 13:8-10 referred to the completion of the NT canon! As for "strong" language, condemning Judaizers to Hell (as Paul) or calling the hypocrites a generation of vipers( as the Baptist) is strong language and no doubt was offensive.

But these were inspired and I am not. And there is little excuse for my lack of self control despite the grief I have felt , so you were right to call me on it! Now, do something about the above cited narrow-mindedness!

    Hi

This whole thread is interesting reading for someone without much theological knowledge but much interest. So theoretically would those with no knowledge of god be required to account? I am thinking of people coming from a culture with no exposure to Christianity i.e. undiscovered tribes? I was raised in a Christian church, but much of the belief system has always seemed arbitrary and man centered. No offense meant to those who feel otherwise.

    Hi Dave

Glad anyone without a degree in theology is still willing to read on.

As for your question, an excellent one, why don't you read Romans Chap one. I would be very interested in your response to that.

The doctrine of entire sanctification, even in Wesley's thought, was never intended to imply sinless perfection--rather, a heart which is totally surrendered to Christ and seeks to please him in all things. Granted, some radical groups have taken this to mean sinless perfection, however, even Wesley did not teach this.

Closed-mindedness is a trait which characterizes every generation, and there will always be those who, for whatever reason, ostracize those who do not embrace their position.

But take heart, Bill. I still love you man! ;)

Just curious, gang--Why is this thread still finding its home in the main DL discussion forum?

    Hi Ralph,
I finished my M.Div. there. What do you need to know? I can tell you that the work is more of the old line correspondence variety, is definitely not lightweight (it was more difficult and required more actual work than my RA Master of Arts degree), and they are openly not accredited.

This concerns the use of the word "dammit".

What I want to know is why use of that innocuous expletive is more reprehensible than the suggestion that the secular among us (and I include myself in that class) produce "base diatribe"?

Personally, I see no harm at all in the former, but something rather insulting in the latter.

The reference to base diatribe was regarding off-color discourse, and in favor of wholesome speech.

Do all secular (non-religious) people use such language? I don't think so. And the argument that "everyone does it" is illogical. I know many people (secular & religious) whom I have seen in high pressure scenario's, yet they never resorted to base language.

It is amazing that one can invest so much in obtaining a substantive education, and yet have difficulty in educating one's vocabulary. If education is more than simply obtaining a degree, should it not include the ability to have civil discourse?

If posters have the freedom to use such language, (and DegreeInfo has seen a few that could earn a Ph.D. in Base Diatribe--based on life experience) those of us who refrain from such should also feel liberty to state their position.

So on this issue we must agree to disagree.

    Wesley and Perfect Love

    ============================================

    Hi Russell

Thankyou for your reassurance. I love you too, sorry.

As for your interpretation of your own creed re sanctification, I believe I could show that you err by references to your own systematics and journal. But this I'll not on this forum labor. Peace!

Perhaps we could both do a UZ thesis on the subject, from our own perspective of course. This would be interesting.

    Have a blessed Lord's Day!

    Hi Bill

Thanks both for your reply and not being offended in the manner it was asked. I have looked up Romans but need more time to digest it before responding. Amazing that even agnostics have a copy on their bookshelf. Again thanks for your reply.

    Hi Dave:

You are very welcome. Thankyou for reading Romans 1. When you feel like it let me know what you think.

Absolutely I am not offended, thankyou for your gracious manner.

I've a son with polor disease (manic depression). Sometimes I think I may have put those genes in him.:D So, I have to watch my ebulliency.

All my best to your son. There is still such a stigma to mental illness and bi-polar disorder is misunderstood. It is unfortunate that you have high cholesterol and that is understod but you have a bio-chemical disorder of the brain and people are less understanding. It is interesting the people from history who it is speculated suffered from bi-polar disorder (eg Winston Churchill). Churchill would go through Manic phases unable to sleep and working furiously and then through periods of depression and blackness.
