Hmmm, I'm looking into an MSTM with a further focus later in IA. I wonder if this Columbia doctorate can be tweaked to accommodate research and publication in that arena or anything related to security without such a heavy emphasis on pure programming languages.

Here's another good MSc. in Technology Management program worth checking out: M.S. Degree in Technology Management | University of Bridgeport

Yes, you can...as long as you have some computer programing skills. I think only Cryptography requires programming language. The Network Security and PDS or IDS don't really need programming language. Also, depending on what specific area of Information Assurance you're into. The Software Security and Reverse Engineering require more programming language skills.

    Mark,

According to Al (Academic Advisor) you don't have to get additional credits as long as you concentrate in a specific area while during your Professional Degree track. Here is what is an excerpt from CVN website. "In order to facilitate finding an advisor, students can either take courses as a non-degree student with a professor that specializes in their research interests or gain admission to the PD program." Technically, you are not admitted to the program at the beginning yet...not until you get all course works done. Then find a research professor, who specialize in your area...then he'll guide you through the dissertation.

It is not entirely true that the delivery method is via WebCT with too much useless discussion. You actually have to go to Fort Lauderdale for classes during the extended weekends. Classes typically start from 8:00 am and end at 6:00 PM each day. However, there is a one-hour lunch break in the afternoon. Professors actually teach during face-to-face meetings. I didn't receive any grade for discussion. I only received grades for assignments (Projects) and tests.

Have you spoken to anyone at SCIS? Nova Southeastern University is big. Each NSU school is independently structured and administered. Each school operate its own budget. Nova doesn't operate like Capella, AIU, Walden, etc. It is structured like a traditional university. If you need to get any information about the program, you should call SCIS directly.

Like I stated in previous post, I will choose Columbia University, NJIT, and Stevens Institute before NSU but NSU is by far a better option than many of the completely online universities that are often mentioned here.

    Dr. Okonkwo,

I totally agree with you. That's why now I have narrowed two schools; Columbia University an NSU. If I don't get accepted to Columbia, then NSU is the school for my goal.

    Dr. Okonkwo,

I have been seriously consdering getting my PHD in IS from NSU. I will likely start the fall of next year. Do you have any advice for me? Good or bad professors or advisors? Any and all advice is appreciated.

I appreciate the suggestion. I didn't know about that one, but the price is a little steep for a Master's. I could understand it for a doctorate.
I'm leaning strongly towards Oklahoma State, since they have an advantageous rate for military students, and it will confer a dual master's at the end.

Thanks to atrox79 and TEKMAN for telling me about this program and getting all of that great info from Columbia. It has completely changed my education plans.

One thing that I always tell anyone that wants to pursue a doctorate is to make that he/she really wants to do it. Pursuing a doctorate could be a rough ride some people. You also have to bear in mind that getting a doctorate doesn't end with the course work. The dissertation phase of your study could be brutal and depressing. You should start thinking about your dissertation topic as early as you can.

Of course, there are a couple of professors that I will advise you avoid but I will not mention their names in a public forum. Once you enroll in the program, I will tell you their names as well as the reason that you should avoid them.

I was actually reading that along with the courses at Nova, there is per semester charge of $2,450 in order to stay enrolled in the program if you don't complete your dissertation by the 37th month (3 years). With 3 terms per year & the fact that dissertations can take 3+ years, the costs add up ($7,350 per year) . I don't know if Columbia also has similar fees, but I would assume that they do. At the end of the day, I would say the Nova program would be pushing $75k, which is substantial without the support that most PhD programs give you.

Link to dissertation fees (I think they're higher now, from what I've been reading): http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/doctoral/pdf/programstructure_admissionsinfo.pdf

A simple phone call to SCIS will lead to more accurate information. It is not true that SCIS has three terms per year. It is actually two terms per year for doctoral programs. Yes, they charge dissertation tuition and continuing dissertation fee if you fail to complete your dissertation in one year. It is charged twice a year (or per term).

Thank you for the clarification. It doesn't seem to be too unreasonable unless the dissertation take 10 years. Is it possible to finish it before the start of the 3rd year, or would you say that the chances of doing so are fairly slim?

The chances of completing your dissertation in one year is very slim. I am not sure that anyone has done that.

Perhaps Karl-Theodor Freiherr zu Guttenberg, a former German Minister of Defense had done that? I assumed he cut and pasted into the Abel Fish Translator, then cut and pasted again into a nice Dissertation format.:wavey:

Hello, could you provide more information about distance or limited residency Phd options offered by Stevens Insititute? That is a really good school. Would be nice to have a program like that from them. Thanks.
