Most of these fast track programs are geared towards people that just need the letters to get jobs. The reality is that there are tons of jobs that ask for an MBA that don't really require one, I have seen ads calling for MBA graduates for sales, head hunters and other positions that normally require only on the job training. With so many MBAs in the market, it looks like the MBA is becoming the high school diploma of the past. The one year par time MBA might be of use to some but I don't see how it can help you to get the background for jobs where the MBA is normally required such as financial analyst, management accounting and operations just to mention a few.

It might be that these types of jobs will start requiring specialized MS degrees such an MS in Finance, Accounting, etc. in order to get hired to differentiate those with a solid background in the subject from those with an MBA.

Roz, does it have to be an MBA or could it be a Masters in, say, Management or Accounting or X? Some MA programs might be less time, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

If you're not picky about the type of accreditation (NA vs. RA) or reputation, your goal should be doable, if you can get admitted for September start and if you don't need to take any prerequisites.

The statistics don't bear your point out.

Even if we assume that the MBA is the only graduate degree being awarded in business then the MBA is still only 25% of all graduate degrees.

    Graduate Degrees confered

Since we know that many different types of degrees are awarded in the business field that percentage goes even lower.

in addition, the following chart indicates only 7.5% of those 25 and older hold a masters degree of any type (US):

    Highest Level of Education

I'm feeling pretty good holding an MBA and professional certifications.

Now perhaps our exposure to a professional or academic environment may make it seem like everyone has an MBA but it certainly has not reached the same level of penetration as the HS diploma.

Can we qualify the debate further? by field, occupation, salary range, etc...

    Roz,

My response was a bit knee-jerk, it looks like you have a valid reason for wanting to get an MBA so quickly. There has been some good advice here - using the Heriot-Watt exam route will be tough, I'm sure there could be easier options in the USA. Best of luck with it. You really will need to lock yourself away to get it done.

For those that asked I am in a distance (blended) MBA program at Henley Business School (University of Reading, UK) - http://www.henley.reading.ac.uk/

My comments about a 1-year MBA being a joke were of course only applicable to the distance mode of learning, where the student is juggling job, family and study. A 1-year full time course would be perfectly normal. In my course you are registered for 4 years, but although a good number of people complete it in the 3 years of structured learning many people (such as me) slip into the fourth year.

For my friend 03310151 - I am currently working full time as the Global Commercial Manager for an energy company, but I am certainly looking forward to that C level job you promise me, which sounds fantastic.

    All the best,

    Dave C.

Obviously, to this guy enrolled in his high and mighty program, everyone else's MBA degree is a joke.

Has anyone heard of the program at Western Governors University? I understand you can fast track it, but that it has all the regional accreditations.

I am considering it as an option for my MBA.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Have you looked at Western Governors University? It is all online and I understand that 1 year is a do-able time frame for their MBA.

I understand they are fully accredited and this may be an option for you.

    Has anyone else attended WGU?

    Thanks,

    Teddy
