    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about Mckinley College. I looked over their website and thought the programs looked pretty thorough. I do know they are nationally accredited. I am interested in accounting/bookkeeping.

I talked to them a month ago about their internet marketing program. The price is Ashworth and Penn Fosterish. Seem like a okay school but...

It might be easier for readers to comment if someone would post a link to the school. Thanks.

I couldn't find any info on them so I moved on. The whole NA thing was not a issue.

Many of our members are focused on graduate degrees and so I'm guessing that they are mindful of the fact that despite the fact that there seems to be a growing number of RA grad programs that will accept DETC credits, this is far from a sure thing at this point. I don't know how an NA degree/certificate in accounting/bookkeeping might be received in the marketplace. Maybe the folks at McKinley can put you in touch with some of their recent grads in regards to this issue. Personally, I am sensitive to issue of cost and can appreciate the fact that in some cases a DETC program might costs less than an RA program but I have to tell you, honestly, that if there's a distance learning RA program of the same cost, I don't know why someone would choose the DETC program. Even if it's just a matter of public perception, all the evidence indicates that RA programs are better received by employers. The McKinley program might suit you well (teaching method, etc.) and if that's the case I wish you the best of luck. I don't believe that anyone can reasonably advise you that it's a mistake.

Thanks for your input. I just turned 40, and I am looking to have a career (tired of jobs that I don't look forward to going to). Does anyone know of any RA schools that offer online bookkeeping courses for a reasonable price?

OK, well I'm not really going to answer your question exactly. I'm not going to give you a list of places to take bookkeeping courses. I'm going to give a list of places where you can earn a Bachelors degree in Accounting through distance learning (BIG difference)

Ashford U Post U Ellis U Florida Tech Kaplan DeVry

    Strayer U Regis U Capella U Liberty U South U

Indiana Tech Mountain State Jones International Colorado Tech

Upper Iowa U Southern New Hampshire U probably others

    Peru State College

Try Peru State College, peru.edu. They have the degree program you are looking at $168.50 per credit.

They seem to have the same platform as Ashworth and Penn Foster. I have experiences with both Penn Foster and Ashworth, they are an economical options to getting your degree, and I happen to like both schools, despite some issues with the way they handle some of the customers services(they are getting better thought), I took the Accounting Diploma at Ashworth and I found it to be well structure and self explanatory. If you don't have an accounting background, their lesson will get you there. Now the final decision in which school you choose will fall on you.

This is my first semester at Peru (thanks to this site), and so far I'm satisfied (psychology major).

I meant to say they look good on paper. I'm at Fort Hays now but I will keep Peru in mind. How do the classes run? I'm on my own a FHS. I only interact with other students during discussions which is once a month.

Thanks for all of your advice. I have been looking at DL schools for a while now. It is so overwhelming. I just have to take the plunge and pick a school. I do have one more question. If I don't want to get into tax preparation, do I need an A.S or B.S. to do bookkeeping? Obviously it would give me a better background, but I was more interested in maybe working for a small company, doing their books.

These days 40 is not to old to start a new career. Check out your local community college for book-keeping courses.

If you want to pursue a degree in accounting you could start with an associates degree such as this one
    http://www.apu.apus.edu/Academics/Degree-Programs/plan.htm?progid=4704&concid=-1
Then you could continue on to a bachelors degree.

If you want an interesting career you might want to look into commercial insurance - my wife got into that business in her 40s and always came home with interesting stories. She obtained a California brokers license but never earned a degree.

Keep reading this site - you will find lots of good information.

I'm in my last class right now for a second BS in accounting. I've been very pleased with the entire program. I have only had one bad instructor in the bunch (there's always that ONE, right?).

Many of the classes are in an eight-week format. However, most of the accounting classes are in semester format. There are no exams for any of the courses. Your grades are determined based on your assignments.
