Hi I was wondering if you could help me understand how one can become a teacher in America.
What I am looking for is a job for another person from Spain. He is a doctor and about 49 years old. He wants to migrate to US and get a small job that does not require actual teaching work, but maybe correcting papers and other such stuff .
He is not in the best health and a proper 9 to 5 job for him would be too strenous. He can arrange for living arrangements with his family here but he needs a job of his own. Is there anything that he can do, preferably something with lesser hours and less strenous that requires him to use his 20+ years of excellent medical knowledge.

    Thanks for your help,
    Adoncia

For extra money, he could be an online adjunct instructor for college courses in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, etc. That would be a teaching position, which he doesn't seem to want and may not even enjoy. However, he would be able to work from home and would only have to work part-time.

BTW, he may get some ideas by typing the city/town where his family lives into a job search engine like indeed.com.

What kind of doctor? A physician? An academic doctor of philosophy, business, psychology or another area? It's hard to recommend employment opportunities without knowing what kind of doctor he is.

I think it's safe to assume he is a medical doctor based on the last sentence of the original post which mentions "20+ years of excellent medical knowledge." Granted, he could be a PhD rather than an MD, but the post seems to imply otherwise.

Of course, clarification from the original poster would be helpful.

Thanks Daniel. That info should be useful.
Yes he is a medical doctor. He has his own dispensary/ small nursing home there. I really like the idea about online teaching. What should be the pay approximately? He wants to be here near his family, but wants to be independent and not have to rely on anyone for money. I will have to ask about visa problems that he could have. I don't think he will receive a work visa for an online job.
    Any other suggestions are welcome,
    Thanks,
    Adoncia

    The reactive approach
The main place that teaching jobs are advertised is in the weekly newspaper called the [ii]Chronicle of Higher Education[/i]. Each issue has a separate advertising section with anywhere from 20 to 60 pages of "Help Wanted" advertising: between 1,000 and 2,000 advertisements from more than 1,000 schools. Even more are listed in the on-line advertising section. It might be appropriate to check out this publication -- college libraries and larger public libraries will have it. http://www.chronicle.com

    The proactive approach
There aren't that many medical schools. Writing a short letter with a CV to each is a lot of work, but not beyond the realm of possibility.

    The assisted approach
There are numerous employment and placement agencies that specialize in medical jobs. One of the larger ones, for instance, is
    http://americanmedicaljobs.staffpointe.com/
(I have no personal knowledge of this, or any other.)
They charge quite high fees, but in many cases, it is the employer who pays the fee.

    The Monster approach
The website www.monster.com is a place that something like 20 million people post their resumes or CVs. There is no cost for doing this. Thousands of employers pay to be able to search those resumes. There is a category for medical practitioners.

Based on my limited knowledge of temporary work visas, I would say that the limiting factor is that he has to find a company that will sponsor him. That's a major limitation, especially since the employer has to pay an application fee, etc.

(Keep in mind I am not familiar with immigration law, and I don't know all the options that are available for his situation.)

You say he has his own dispensary/nursing home back in the home country. If he can get a nursing home going here, immigration by entrepreneurship might be an option, too. Nota Bene: I am not an immigration lawyer, nor do I play one on TV.

You know, I've been feeling a bit sleep deprived lately, so maybe it's time for me to go to bed, but I seem to remember an old thread sometime back where a young lady wanted to help her father immigrate from India. Wish I could remember how long ago that one was.

Hi Ted, I have sent a pm to the indian lady...hope she gets back to me. I was amazed how we both are seeking almost similar information. Thanks so much for bringing that thread to my notice.
He has a small nursing home/ practice..more like a dispensary, so immigration by
entrepreneurship might not be an option.
Daniel, you are right, the major problem is the temporary visa. It is very difficult to get a company to sponsor that. I do not think the online teaching jobs will help with that because they can find other people with similar qualifications who already have a green card/citizenship etc.
He has a couple of members in his family who are green card holders but it seems it takes a long long time to sponsor a green card. It would have been a lot easier if any of them were US citizens.
John, Thanks for those links. I knew about monster but I found those other websites really helpful. I have decided to post his resume on the medical jobs website.
Thanks so much, further replies/ suggestions are welcome..

    Yes.

But I hasten to add that I don't do individual consulting. I simply don't have spare time at this point in my life, or sufficient current knowledge.

    Wow!
I have tremendous respect for you John and am very grateful to you.
Over 4 years back when I came to USA, I was totally lost and wanted to complete my degree in order to pursue further education. All the colleges I looked at were too expensive or their programs too lengthy.
I found your book in my local library and read it cover to cover..about all the colleges and options to complete an entire degree by testing and other ways.
I contacted Excelsior, Tesc, one university in London and COSC and narrowed down to Excelsior. This was in Nov/Dec 2005.
I have almost completed my degree from Excelsior. I need only one more class in Math/ Statistics to be officially done.
This option was wonderful for me, less expensive and much faster. I even got some old engineering credits transferred last year.
I am very happy with my choice and really want to thank you from my heart.
If it was not for your book, maybe I would never know about these options and maybe I would still be searching. Since I am from another country I did not even have an idea that getting a degree by testing is possible. Your book proved to be invaluable for me.
    Thanks so much John,

Daniel, do you know where to look for online instructor jobs. I go in touch with him and he says he can use his family's greencard to do a part time job.
Green card holders are allowed to do extra jobs and work visa holders only one job, so he cannot do a job here until he finds a company to sponsor him.
You are right, the online/ part time ones will not help him get a work visa, but a green card holder in the family will help.

Since some members of this forum are online instructors (I'm just a wanna-be grad student), I would search the forum for "instructor," "employment," "positions," and other keywords. When I searched for "online instructor," there were some informative posts, including this one:

    And a relevant thread:

    Employment Opportunities

Also, I would check out sites dedicated to online adjunct instructors, like:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Online_Adjuncts

And I would check out indeed.com, monster.com, and other job engines.
