Massachusetts and DL I would like to start with an online school and finish my bachelors in psychology and then move on to getting a masters in counceling. I would like to teach later on in life in a college in Massachusetts, and travel in other areas of the world. So I would like to know if receiving an education online, would have an effect on me being able to find a job, teaching in MA, or anywhere else I might end up .
Online in Mass Massachusetts - How about an online Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling (2 weeks of residency required, the rest can be done online) http://www.umassonline.net/degrees/MasterEducationCounseling.html It appears that UMassOnline is doing what Penn State WorldCampus does, which is to blend the courses and faculty of several UMass campuses into one entity. This entity then provides the online learning environment. You'll need to double check the accreditation for counseling, but I would wager that your degree will be universally accepted (especially if you work in Massachusetts). Most of these programs don't state whether or not you completed your degree online or not.
Hi and thanks for the reply. I want to start with CCU(California coast) in order to save some money. I do realise its accredited by DETC and it's better to go with a school that is RA but UMASS and many other RA schools have told me they will accept a bachelor degree from CCU. I am trying to speak with someone from the Dept of Education in Mass to see if this is worth doing before I invest all this time and money. =)
Euphoric, If cost is an issue, I would likely recommend that you look into Peru State College. Peru is regionally accredited, only $130/credit and they offer a 100% online BS in Psychology. You would be spending only $60 more per course at Peru vs. CCU (at $110/credit). Good luck! - Tom
If you want to teach in Massachusetts, you can't go wrong with a degree from UMass Online, which has other graduate options in Counseling besides Rehab Counseling; http://www.umassonline.net/DegreeBrowse.cfm Just keep in mind that Massachusetts has among the most stringent higher education laws in the country, so steer clear of less-than-wonderful schools.
I contacted Umass and they said that they would accept a bachelors degree from CCU. Is more than a masters degree required to teach??
Penn Forester, has anyone received an associates degree with them? Which colleges would accept an associates degree from Penn forester or PCDI? And is there anything cheap similiar to PCDI or Penn Forester that I could possibly finish my bachelors with ? Does anyone know why PCDI or Penn Forester does not offer Bachelor degrees yet? I noticed they offered some Master programs.. Would a school like Walden U , UMass, accept these degrees?
For most adjunct teaching positions and many community college teaching positions, a Master's degree is sufficient. For the majority of full-time teaching jobs at 4-year institutions, a Ph.D. is the baseline.
A couple things to check on: Is an undergraduate in psychology required for entry into a master's in counseling. Will an MA in counseling qualify someone to teach at the post-secondary level in an area that has any demand for instructors? Do you know what area of counseling you want to specialize in? Some states require a doctorate to practice some specialties without supervision. How does your travel plan relate to a master's in counseling? Do you want to travel and work? There are probably other degrees that will get you travel time much easier. Whether your degree is from online or B&M matters much less than where your degree is from.
