Well: Can y'all say chutzpa? Well, chutzpa is a good old Yiddish word meaning something like the English word arrogance, but, oh, so much more. I am not even sure the Greek word hubris quite does justice to the word chutzpa, though it is far better than arrogance. Chutzpa means arrogance beyond belief, but can only be defined by example. There was once a man who killed both his mother and his father. Having received all due process, he was eventually convicted of his crime. The judge asked him if he had anything to say for himself. The condemned man said, "Yes, Your Honor! You must grant me the mercy of the court, for I am an orphan!"

    Hi Lou

Like abortion, capital punishment can legitimately be debated on both side forever. To me the important issue here is that it is the law of the land and specific person has had their case appealed and reappealed for decades. We should never be happy about an execution but in many cases it seems appropriate.

Can't chutzpah also have a somewhat positive connotation, though?

BTW, if you look closely, I never called you either conservative or Republican. :)

    Ted Heiks,

You forgot one other thing they get free, in many cases these crimminals are offered tuition free college educations, were honest tax paying working people have to spend thousands of dollars to send themselves and thier children to better themselves.

    Only in America!

While there may be other, more positive meanings of chutzpa, I certainly have never heard of them. At any rate, a man who spends 24 years appealing his conviction and then turns around and says that 24 years on death row is cruel and unusual punishment is a chutzpadik of the same order as the chap that murders his parents and then demands mercy of the court because he is an orphan.

In all fairness, you never said in so many words that Ted Heiks is a conservative, or even a Republican. But you did make a post (your first in this thread, the seventh post of the entire thread) in which you mentioned certain things that conservatives are supposed to think in reply to a Ted Heiks post. So, it certainly seemed like you were saying it, or implying it, or hoping that others would infer it. I am right now having a lot of problems with people over at www.politicalforum.com branding me "conservative" or "Republican" or "right-winger" when they only know of my stance on one issue. True, with most people, you can learn their stance on one issue and probably figure out their stances on a whole range of issues. But, as for me, I prefer to think for myself, and there is no way that I would ever allow either Newt Gingrich or Teddy Kennedy to do all my thinking for me. I refuse to assassinate my brains or to toe a party line.

Ah, concise and to the point. I must agree with Bruce.

Nah. I thought your position on this particular issue seemed in line with conservatism, so I used your statement as a springboard for making the point I did about the conservative position on this particular issue.

As far as Republican, I can't see that they stand for anything anymore, so I wouldn't even try to peg someone as one of those.

Fair enough. I too agree with conservatives on some issues and disagree on others.
