    Marilynd,

I second most of your thoughts. J2P2 was indeed a "great" pope and to me, a greater man. It seems like yesterday when he ascended the papal throne. Oh well, time flies and waits for no one.

I earnestly do not mean to be disrespectful by engaging in the ongoing ruminations about his possible successor. The rumor mongering has begun fast and furiously, anyway.

Here is news.yahoo.com's take on this interesting, enigmatic and most sensitive issue. Interestingly, Asia and Africa are not mentioned as possibilities in this geography-based musings. Why not?.

    Thanks.

    =============================================

"Will geography dictate the winner chosen by this elite electorate?

"If so, another European is the safest bet. Once the center of the church, the continent still retains nearly half the voting cardinals (those under age 80), with the 20 Italians in the lead.
Latin America claims some 42 percent of the world's Catholics but only 18 percent of the votes in the conclave.

"There won't be an American pope — the world body won't go for a superpower pontiff — but with 11 votes, they have potential to develop as a swing group.

Kind of presumptuous. Who are you, exactly? Just a little mass of chemicals and ectoplasm existing on a fleck of dust in a vast universe making absolute statements about who/what is/is not God? The best you can possibly say is: "I don't think he's God, hasn't been proven to me, no conclusive evidence I see, etc. etc."

Just take a little step down from the absolutist arrogance and see what you really are: just a speck on a speck like me and the rest of us.

How about moving the theological polemic to another thread?

That wasn't what this thread was about.

Re: And the winner is...Bill Dayson!

I refrained because as you know, I always make comments after being the first to announce such breaking news. :D

I refrained because I have never been a fan of his but didn't want to express my personal thoughts during a time of such tragedy that affected so many.

BTW, it nice to know I am in your thoughts! ;)

    NEW POPE

Saw on television that a black from an African nation is the top candidate to become the new pope. I don't remember which country he is from. I caught this as I was doing something else.

Kind of late in history but a welcome to many. It would be good, I think, to have a black Pope as it would further the cause for equality in the world.

To mention Reagan in conjunction with my political philosophy shows you don't know what my political philosophy is.

Yes, the Pope was correct on some issues--capital punishment, abortion, etc.-- and wrong on others--ordination of women, condoms, Iraq, etc.

I agreed with very little he advocated. This in no way diminishes the man. He was a good man who cared deeply about people. At least he was consistent--supporting the culture of life across the board.

Picky, picky picky. We can't even ridicule each other's theology on a thread about the POPE!?! ;)

I'm not a Christian, but I had alot of respect for him. I recall his visit to Los Angeles, my home area, really impressed me. May God bless him.

How correct you are, Mr. Engineer! "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on his name;" (John 1:12)

Sorry Jimmy, my comments are out of line on this one. It took me about half an hour, but I was finally able to find this thread.

    Take care, Abner :)
