Bumping this thread up to see if anyone has any more experience with the program since February. I continue to be intrigued by the program, but the cost is what's holding me back. I'm not finding many good programs that have this mix of management and technical courses in the curriculum. Even many of the better online MBA's don't offer many tech-based electives.

AKAIK, you still need to spend some significant time in Cambridge to earn a Harvard Extension degree.

To clarify, I was speaking of the NYU MSMS program, to see if anyone had any more info on that program since there were a few here that expressed preliminary interest.

I'd bet that when the resume reads "Harvard University" that the reader misses entirely what is beyond the words "Master of..." Especially so if the resume line reads:

That looks to be pretty prestigiuos to me. Much better than say:

    :D

...And driving consumer prices down. Like at Wal-Mart, and in turn, driving up employment.

Economics is about thinking through ALL the effects. The latest World Bank/Columbia/NBER data I've seen shows that globalization is creating a middle class in India and China. When calculated on a per capita basis (post fall of communism), globalization is making the poor richer too - not just the rich.

Question: Would the MSMS degree be similar to an MS Operations Research degree? (Forgive my ignorance if they are totally different.)

I'm not wanting to change the subject, but if you have a Science or Engineering undergrad you can get the MS in Operations Research from Columbia University online. While I don't have access to a calibrated prestige-O-meter, I would think Columbia would be higher in prestige than NYU (YMMV). At least the tuition is about the same.

No, the MSMS degree is more like a hybrid between IT and management classes.

    About the Harvard MLA (IT)

In regards to previous statements about having to spend significant time in Cambridge for the Harvard Extension MLA in IT....

I looked into this program last year, exchanging emails with a rep. You can satisfy the on-site residency requirements by taking a single course during Summer School for 8 weeks. The rest of the courses can be completed online.

    re: NYU

    Hello bo79

I am presently a master's candidate in NYU's Management and Systems program via DL. If all goes well with my thesis, I will graduate in Sept.

I highly recommend this program to all who are interested. The courses are very intense and are 6 weeks in length. There are two 6 week sessions per semester.

Entrance requirements are typical - GRE or GMAT, 2 letters of recommendation and an essay.

If NYU is too pricey or you don't want to write a thesis, check out a top 25 ranked techno-mba program like Southwest Missouri State U at www.mscis.smsu.edu They have a good mix of business and IT courses.

    Just a thought

    thanks SeptGrad.

Glad to see a current student of the program chime in. Other questions for you:

    1. What do you currently do (as a profession)?
    2. Did you consider an MBA? if so which programs?
    3. What are your thoughts on the utility of the MSMS v. MBA?
    4. What made you choose the MSMS over other programs?

Sorry for asking so many questions, I just want to find out more about the program and what current students think of it.

    Re: thanks SeptGrad.

    Hello romns116,
    1. systems engineer/technical trainer
    2. Yes but most MBA programs are too lengthy for non-business undergrads. I looked at Notre Dame, Duke, Florida, Nova Southeastern.
    3. The MBA is a more comprehensive study for running a business at the top level.
    4. I looked at Syracuse but they were too restrictive in admissions -just once a year in july and they require yearly on campus visits so I chose NYU for its reputation and convenience.

    More questions..

    good info SeptGrad.

    1. You mentioned the program was intense -- could you describe a typical week for you? (reading/writing/research load)
    2. Is the curriculum pretty much half-business and half-technology? or does it lean more towards technology?

I'm a Sr. DBA, looking to move into upper mgmt within the company. I don't have a business background nor a business undergrad.

The program brochure describes the MSMS almost like a balanced technoMBA, which sound like the perfect program for my situation. Plus the NYU name doesn't hurt, in case I end up on the market again.
