    Ted,
I hope they can make RA status, I have seen their reading list for some of the History graduate classes offered, and it is every bit and more the work load anyone would find in a RA setting!

They seem to be very serious about RA.... now if they would only offer a doctorate in any shape or form within a DL format, then many of us history freaks out there would migrate towards that program like a herd of wildebeests on the serengeti plain.
    best,
    Gavin

    Thanks Ted!!!!!

I think I'm going to give them a call this week, my interest is in Intelligence Analysis. (Maybe I have some kind of sick secret desire to be yelled at by John Bolton?????)

Ted and Gavin ( and other board members),

If and when AMU starts their doctoral program in Military Studies, what would you do your dissertation on?
I shall start first. I would love to track the 3rd Army with Patton through Europe or analyze the War of 1812 militarily. Your turn.

I'll take a crack at it.

I would be very interested in studying General U.S. Grant. Researching his management of the Union Army and analyzing the decisions made vs. the results acheived.

I believe many of Grant's military management techniques are useful today.

    Micheal,
Instead of the ETO, I would like to venture into the PTO and toy with the American war planners "Orange" latter modified to "Rainbow Five".
Personally I should stick to the ETO....many relatives endured the London Blitz

Also an area in the civil war that fascinates me is the production methods used in both North and South arsenels.

Here goes, again. I tried to post my answer to this one earlier tonight, but after pressing the send button and being promised that the computer would take me to my post, the computer screen came up with some access denied message. So my earlier post appears to have been miscarried.

Anyhow. It depends. If American Military University's PhD in Civil War Studies allows some sort of concentration or dissertation field in Economic, Social & Cultural History, I will probably write _The Civil War Diaries of Black Women Preachers_ or, if told to narrow same a bit, I might write _Black Self-Help Through Education and Entrepreneurship in the Religio-Political Thought of Maria W. Stewart_. If American Military University's PhD in Civil War Studies is strictly in Military History, I will probably write _The Life and Wars of Brevet Brigadier General Bill Gates_ or _The Civil War Career of Brevet Brigadier General Josiah Pickett_.

Originally, it was an MA Political Scfience/Holocaust Studies. Later, there was a choice of either an MA Political Science/Holocaust Studies or an MA History/Holocaust Studies. Most recently, all I could find was an MA History/Holocaust Studies. The answer, however, should be living here: www.apus.edu

    Ted,

Is there is a thesis option for the MA degree program at AMU?

    Gavin,

How is life at West Alabama University? I know you finally got your reading list. What is it comprised of?

    One last thing,

If AMU does start a doctorate program, I am pretty sure I am going to sign up. According to what I am hearing here, it looks like it might be 2007. Oh and c. novick, I didnt mean to exclude you or the other would be DL history PhD program seekers.

The master's programs at AMU are all non-thesis degrees.

    No problem! :)

    The program looks very exciting.

I am actually thinking about shifting gears. I enjoy NCU a great deal, but a history MA and Ph.D. is something I would really enjoy working towards. I'm so confused....

I say do both the MBA/PhD in Business and the MA/PhD in History! That'll give you both the degrees you love (the history degrees) and the degrees that'll teach you how to see entrepreneurial opportunities doing something you love (the business degrees).

I agree with Ted, although it may tax your sanity. A long long time ago, I wanted to double major in history and meterology then after I achieved my BA/BS, I would then go on to earn my MA and PhD in history while working as a meterologist. Unfortunately, math is not my strong point. The dream had to die. Pressing time forward, I earned my MLS to get a job. There is not a day that goes by that I dont think about it. In short, if history makes you feel and wonder, then go for it. Speaking for me, I am totally behind anyone that wants to be the field that I absolutely adore.

    Hey, Tireman!

Just saw in another thread that you & the wife dropped Northcentral! What programs were you doing?

    Michael,
So far, it consists of 4 "Osprey" series of books, similar in style to the 1970's "Ballentine's" military history books. Each book is about 100-150 pages and make for a good read, the titles are "Seven Days Battles 1862", "Vicksburg 1863", "Chickamauga 1863" and "Gettysburg 1863".

Surprisingly light load, however when in contact with the bookstore a few weeks ago I was (could be mistaken) under the impression there would be two more books added to the list, either way it goes it's not too bad...I actually expected more reading!

I'm thinking of calling AMU and see what kind of scoop I can get on the possibility of a Ph.d program...I will report back!
    Best, Gavin

    Ted,

I was in the PhD in Business Administration program. I just didnt see what a PhD in business would do for me. I took one class, earned a A- and then dropped. My wife was in the PhD program in Psychology. She just didnt want to finish it. She said that she didnt have the heart. She felt so relieved when she dropped that I didnt push the issue. I just want her to be happy. She is a great counselor, so a PhD at this time would not benefit her.
