The fact is, most masters programs act as a revenue booster for universities. I'd venture to say that most universities use the tuition dollars from their masters programs as money to put towards their PhD students stipends and tuition waivers. Those universities without PhD programs likely still utilize the tuition dollars towards something that benefits some other student program(s).

I think the top LLM program or prestigious would help post JD for those who received a law degree from lower-tier schools.

I may chime in here, providing I am a non-lawyer foreigner outside the US, but employed by an MNC that wants to ensure its on-ground health businesses in some countries also comply with US laws. I dislike the title MLS, which may somehow imply I am a 'nerd,' if not entirely. Nor do I like the abbreviation that is similar to a soccer player's game.:D I favor Hofstra University's MA in health law for non-JD holders.

I recall several British universities also offer online LLM programs.
Not sure if LLB or JD is a mandatory pre-requisite at those universities if non-lawyers want to take their programs.

Not to be confused with Master of Liberal Studies or Master of Library Science or Medical Laboratory Scientist or Multiple listing Services or Major League Soccer, etc

Graduates of "lower tier" law schools DO seem to think getting an LL.M. from, say NYU or Georgetown will buff up the resume when looking for Big Law jobs but it ain't so, folks. At least the legal recruiting community says so. A Big Law Firm cares about whether you got your J.D. from an "acceptable" school and your J.D. class rank and that's it (assuming they've given up preferring white men under a certain age). Spending $50,000 for a Top Fourteen LL.M is flushing the cash down the nearest "Public Amenity".

That is exactly why I went with Taft Law for my tax degree. Nobody on Wall Street was ever going to hire me anyway and I wanted to study tax because I find it deeply interesting. (Yeah, yeah, roll your eyes friends. I'm used to it!) Taft was by far the cheapest program with actual accreditation.

From all of my research (which is limited) Big Law typically recruits from the T14. Anyone that attends a JD program from outside the T14 needs to be the top of their class to stand a chance from what I have heard and read. So yes, I tend to agree that LL.M would not do much for folks.

There are thousands of online, non-JD programs at law schools. This website lets people search LLM, graduate certificate, and master's programs in law. Yeah, quite a few LLM programs in the UK don't require an LLB or JD.

No, I would not roll my eyes. I have heard how sophisticated tax is in the US. My US colleagues with PhDs in STEM have to outsource their personal tax claims to some firms as they cannot figure out the calculation jobs.

Yes, we do, but so long as carried interest is treated as something other than ordinary income the system will be unfair.

(Hm. Is it possible to HEAR eyes glazing over?)

This is really awesome! Now, if only there was something similar for specialty law clinics...
