I know this isn't an assumption, you're a school teacher that has had time to sit on your computer and argue with me throughout the day while you should be teaching your class. Here is an idea, why don't you focus on teaching your students, educating these less fortunate kids you keep waxing poetic about and not arguing with some random stranger on the internet because we have differing views? Just a thought.

This is an assumption again. I'm not currently a school teacher. I'm a university staff member with periodic "down time" throughout the day, just like you. I have this time because I work quickly and efficiently, and I also have other work on weekends and special events. Any criticism you have for me on this point you can kindly direct to yourself.

Are there any more incorrect assumptions you would like to share?

Not making blind statements at all just making comments/opinions based on various books/textbooks/articles I have read in my years of study. I also base some of my opinions and reactions on first hand knowledge. My family was lower class and while I have moved up the ladder the majority of my family is still considered lower class.

We can agree on something :) I also feel that people are rewarded for working hard and doing the right thing. I am not saying that those who start off at a lower position can't get to where the higher person is just that it is harder. But we do agree that it takes hard work and determination to make that happen.

    Bullpaddies.

How many poor and working poor do you people know that grew up in that class. Here are facts from my personal experience you already at a huge disadvantaqe growing up today low income and these are not something one can ignore.

    1. Smart poor avoid debt so are far less likely to go to school after High School if its more than what they are willing to risk. So few would risk paying for college and opt to work, go to a technical program or other option over a degree. There are exceptions but the fact is most poor drop out of High School or get a diploma and have no real work skills from it so then are limited long term to the same station they came from.

    2. Dont't look right this is a factor a poor child is not likely to get unnecessary dental treatment so their teeth might be odd looking to a young person looking for work with perfect teeth, some might have the signs of poverty be obese or worn looking or have open sores from untreated diabetes etc. This is by far the one that hurts the most INHO. Proper care for teeth say braces is not inexpensive and not really needed so is often the key marker. You can say eat better for example but a poor person often gets their meat from a fast food restaurant since the burger is far cheaper than they could make at home, which is not odd look at the price of good ground beef in a store and think about other good foods.

    3. Culture of poverty is the last major leg even if your nice looking and get a High School diploma the culture around you is not supporting of you its not always obvious like being in the inner city but subtle. A parent not wanting to spend money for college over what they have saved ,$5000, say or having to work to help the family or being disabled and not having as many options as a disabled person from a higher strata family or like me you just get comfortable with what you have and that adds to it. If one doesn't care about fancy things its a demotivator to seek more money but that at least can be seen as more positive by some it still is part of the poor unbringing and my folks were always hard working poor.

Its not always black and white poor are often poor like the rich often rich due to circumstances and its rare now to see a poor person rise to even Middle Class from what I can tell over the next stage.

And perception matters to I'm poor in income, I see a person earning $30k and they are middle class to me and a couple earning twice that is middle class and you earn twice that your rich. Its in perspective to you that is outrageous but from the standards of my experience its the numbers and how I see this. So the arguement must be based on standards and we likely would disagree on them.

I am sorry I contributed to this thread devolving into what it's become but the above comment honestly might have just made me dumber for having read it. I'll admit I had a good laugh at the part where the author tries to ties physical attractiveness to success.
Can we transition back to talks about the budget? What did everyone think of the outline for next year's budget Obama presented at GWU yesterday?

Physical attractiveness is an important determanant of success, since it subconciously affects one's perception of another. It is one of humanity's strongest cognitive biases.

It is silly, even ludicrous, to say that a fast food burger is less expensive than making food at home. My lunch today consists of a sandwhich (turkey and meunster cheese with spinach on multigrain bread) two sides (an empire apple and celery) and a drink (unsweetened iced green tea with lime). Total cost, about $1.50. What can you get from McDonald's for that?

Also, the long term cost to the person living off of fast food is very costly due to the onset of early health problems, being overweight, etc. In the lowest income neighborhoods, it is hard for people to find access to things we take for granted like vegetables. Chain grocery stores typically do not like to set up shop in poverty stricken areas, thus expanding the long term health cost issues of these low income residents. The problem is so prevalent, many communities are starting up community gardens, as local liquor stores are not big on selling veggies.

Good job on the healthy food MC!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up man!!!!!!!!

That it is healthy is mostly a side effect, and a great one at that! I would much rather eat a sandwich or a salad- both of which are easy to make, flexible, inexpensive and delicious- than a flattened fried grease-wad. I also like apples more than I like candy bars and tea more than soda, but I guess that is just me :drive:

I agree on your analysis of the health benefits- we must do everything we can to keep our personal healthcare costs down!

Oh, and I wanted to add, my lunch may have been $1.50 if you add up the sum of its parts, but breakfast and dinner are even less expensive than that. A bowl of oats or yogurt with nuts and spices easily costs less than $.50, and a bowl of pasta w/sauce or a plate of chicken with rice and vegetables doesn't come even come close to $1.00.

The much hyped $38 Billion dollar tax cut a few weeks ago in realty will only cut the budget by $350 Million this year. I found the GAO analysis yesterday but could not find it today but I found this article.
Why $38.5B budget deal will only cut spending by $352M - Yahoo! News

Anyway I decided to apply a similar strategy to my personal and cut it by $250,000. I decided not to buy myself a Rolls Royce auto.
