Already received AS in 2008 - Lib. Studies. (COSC) I'm choosing American Studies for my BA (COSC) Just want to know if I'm on the right track like I think I am, but I've been wrong before ;-) CLEP - Am. Govt. DSST - Civil War; Hist. Vietnam (UP) CLEP - Humanities (?)- for 6 needed in Arts CLEP - Anal.&Interp. LIT (?) - for 6 needed for LIT ECE - AbPsych; SocPsych; Adulthood & Aging; Cultural Diversity (all UP)- for 6 Behavioral, and the 6 they need for choosing one area "to ensure depth" (I'm choosing Behavioral) ? - will they accept these for the req. I know there's got to be a COSC grad out there who chose this major, or who knows about it. Thanks a bunch!!
Most of those don't sound particularly "American" to me, but then my concentration was Information Systems, so what do I know? Have you asked your Academic Advisor yet? Their opinion is the one that will really matter here. -=Steve=-
Four of those were "American," including Cultural Diversity which is primarily American in focus, however... Absolutely. The rest of us can only guess.
You also need to think about what you are going to do with the degree when you get it. Some degrees have more utility than others. Are you getting this degree for enjoyment or with a specific goal or career in mind? That's another good reason to talk to an advisor.
Regarding speaking with Advisor: I post here first to see if anyone knows from experience (COSC, major, etc...) because I want to get as many exams under my belt before matriculating. As far as the major - my main goal is working in Archives and Records, and after the BA I'll be obtaining my MLIS (Masters Library and Information Science). I wondered about the Vietnam too - not American studies, but there are courses I can use instead of exams (African Am. Hist., states hist., etc...)
Are you a member of degreeforum.net? They have more information on exams than you will find here, including a section specifically for the Big Three. Someone should be able to help you there. Also, in case you haven't seen it before, free-clep-prep.com has free study guides for each CLEP and DSSTs.
Just to clarify - COSC does not offer majors, only concentrations. I don't know if this is important to you or not... Best of luck,
Actually, isn't the DSST exam actually, "History of the Vietnam War"? It seems to me that it would certainly fit into an American studies program (subject, of course, to the guidance of your adviser). Like Steve, however, I didn't have an American studies concentration at COSC (I had Psych), so your mileage may vary. Peace, Matt
