    Tekman,

Could you please share what you like about NCU? Thanks!

I talked to NCU and Walden reps today. Both told me that I can be admitted into their doctoral programs with a nationally accredited Master's. So, here's at least two schools that I have to choose from. I'm excited! I will continue looking at other schools to include Cappella.

I really appreciate the inputs everyone!

"Any" is not exactly correct. Some programs require you to have a master's degree. However, many PhD programs accept students straight from undergrad programs. Therefore, if you have a RA undergraduate degree with a decent GPA, there are many programs that you can apply to.

If you have a RA master's in the field in which you are receiving your PhD, you are reducing the amount of necessary credits down from the typical 90 needed to get the PhD. Most DL doctorates that I have looked at require a master's as part of admission. Because of this, they are often in the 60 credit range.

As always, there are exceptions to and variations of the above info.

    Hodge,

There are many factors that I like Northcentral University. Let me list everything out to answer your question.

    1. Regional accredited institution & ACBSP Candidate
    2. Discounted tuition for Military members, Veterans, and Federal Employee ($2500.00 - $284.00/credit) cannot beat that at any other institutions for the Doctoral level.
    3. Unlike University of Phoenix, no negative or lawsuit against them
    4. 2 Classes at the time is considering as full-time student (For Veteran MGI Bill benefit purpose). I cannot deal with more than two classes at the time with a fulll-time job.
    5. Lot of students have great experience with the institution
    6. Great Service - Have no problem when contacting the admistration or academic advisors.
    7. Last, but not least ..... the name sounds better than Capella, and Walden. (It is my opinion, but maybe different from others0

    Airtorn,

You are right...however the majority institutions want to see the Master degree for admission because they want to see how your academic stand. Just likes Northcentral University; just requires only 120 undegraduate credits to apply for Ph.D program. In this case, the students must complete 81 credits vice 51 credits with a Master degree.

Once I thought about applying to Northcentral for the Ph.D program in Management Engineering & Technology with my undergraduate degree. When I realized that it would look odd in my resume when I list Bachelor degree and Ph.D. Therefore, I am working my Master degree. Besides, I am not smart...and only 23 years old...cannot deal with Doctoral level yet. I need to enjoy my life, I don't want to spend the whole weekend on writing dessertation.

    Why I like Capella

Since Capella is on your short list, let me explain why I am happy I chose Capella for my doctoral study. I have been a PhD candidate since April 2003 in the Organization and Management program, and I am working on my literature review.

My original appeal to Capella was that although the degree could be earned by DL, that there were three one-week residencies. I liked the idea of being connected to a community and having some face to face instruction. My residencies were intellectally stimulating as well as a lot of fun. I still have my notes from all three of them. :)

Overall, the level of instruction I received was top notch. I had instructors who gave me individualized attention, praised me when I deserved praise, and yes, cyber kicked me in the rear when I needed the kick in the rear.

Although I am still in the candidate stage, based on my experiences I don't believe I will have any issues with a Capella degree. I have presented papers at the following conferences:

Inter-University Seminar (IUS) on Armed Forces and Society
    Eastern Sociological Society
    IUS - Canada Conference.

As a result of a paper I presented at IUS, I was able to obtain my outside reader, who is an associate editor of the journal, Armed Forces and Society (AF&S). I was encouraged to submit this paper to AF&S - which I did. Although the paper was originally rejected, I was given excellent suggestions to improve upon the paper, and to resubmit the work. (Project over Christmas break).

In addition, I am working with the Buder Center of Washington University this summer. My responsibilities include designing a research instrument and supervising one of their MA candidates and our college's interns in conducting field research to determine ways to increase financial assets in Native American communities.

Ultimately, the decision to attend is yours. Get as much info as you can and then make a decision. Wherever you decide to go, I wish you the best of luck.

    Great feedback Shawn. Thanks!

If anyone as any other suggested schools to add to my short list please let me know. Right now, I'm leaning toward NCU because of the $285 per hour tuition rate I qualify for as a federal government employee. Even if NCU is not the best choice, how can I overlook that great deal?

I'm going to check out the Capella web site today. I'll let you know what I think.

I have been taken PhD classes at NCU and I have really enjoyed it so far. Do you have any specific questions?

    Randall,

About how many pages of writing has been required for your classes?

    Do you watch lectures online?

How much do you spend on textbooks?

How responsive are the instructors to your emails, calls, etc.?

Have you had any problems conducting research?

Why did you decide to attend NCU?

Any other info you think I might need to know is certainly appreciated.

    Thanks!

About how many pages of writing has been required for your classes? It depends on the class. One class is 2 papers - 15 pages each. One class was 5 papers - 10 pages each. As a rule I would count on 40 pages per class

Do you watch lectures online? never

How much do you spend on textbooks? about $125.00

How responsive are the instructors to your emails, calls, etc.? All but one was excellent. I expected a response in 24 hours and all came through except one who was about 48 hour average.

Have you had any problems conducting research? no

Why did you decide to attend NCU? cost, accreditiation, specialization, flexibility, and no residency

Any other info you think I might need to know is certainly appreciated. Think about what you want to do with the degree and pick the school / program that will best work for you.

    Tekman,

Thanks for the info. I checked out the web site. It looks like a great program.

Right now, I'm 75% sure that the Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership at Northcentral is the one for me. The reasonable cost and completely online format make it a great fit for me.

Also, a NCU enrollment advisor told me that I can gain final acceptance based on my RA Bachelor's degree. Since my Master's is completely unrelated I won't have any credits to transfer into the program anyway so there's no need to have it considered for admissions purposes. I will have to complete 81 credit hours for the Ed.D.

If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.

Cool! It seems that Northcentral University is a better choice for you. I can't wait to start my Ph.D degree at Northcentral. I'll be there in January 2009.

BTW, Well...what is about 24 elective credits? Can they use those credits from your NA Master's courses?

I don't see how I will have any transfer credits from my Biblical Studies Master's. Of course, I will talk about that with NCU.

    Thanks for the question.

If I read the NCU information correctly, the electives can be transferred into the PhD/EdD at the discretion of the advisor/admissions committee.
